{"id":1767,"date":"2012-07-03T10:46:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T17:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/scientologybeliefs\/?p=1767"},"modified":"2017-10-24T05:13:56","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T12:13:56","slug":"silent-birth-misconceptions-vs-what-it-really-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/scientologybeliefs\/2012\/07\/silent-birth-misconceptions-vs-what-it-really-is\/","title":{"rendered":"Silent Birth&#8211;Misconceptions vs What it Really is"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Spurred on by my annoyance over reading what celebrity gossip blogs were writing about silent birth this week (they are dredging up every possible scrap \u00a0they can talk about relating to \u00a0Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) I submit this very simple explanation from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientologyparent.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scientology Parent blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1><a title=\"Silent Birth Questions &amp; Answers\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scientologyparent.com\/silent-birth\/silent-birth-questions-answers\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Silent Birth Questions &amp; Answers<\/a><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p><strong>WHAT IS \u201cSILENT BIRTH\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientologyparent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/image7.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scientologyparent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/image_thumb3.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"308\" height=\"253\" align=\"right\"><\/a>This is all about providing the best possible environment for the birthing mother and her new baby.<\/p>\n<p>It is labor and delivery done in a calm and loving environment and with no-spoken words by everyone attending as much as possible.\u00a0\u00a0 Chatty doctors and nurses, shouts to \u201cPUSH, PUSH\u201d and loud or laughing remarks to \u201cencourage\u201d are the types of noises that are meant to be avoided.<\/p>\n<p>It is based on Mr. Hubbard\u2019s research into the mind and spirit. He found that words spoken during moments of pain and unconsciousness can have adverse effects on an individual later in life. They are recorded in the reactive mind as engram.\u00a0 Anyone can read about this in the book\u00a0<em>Dianetics, The Modern Science of Mental Health.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mothers naturally want to give their baby the best possible start in life and thus keep the birth as quiet as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW DOES THIS ACTUALLY WORK?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no specific routine.\u00a0 Just like care is taken in all other aspects of labor and birth, a woman and her doctor or midwife and any others present work out how to communicate without words.\u00a0 Different women have done different things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it true that Scientologists can\u2019t touch or talk to their baby for three days to a week?\u00a0 Or are there seven days of silence after birth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Absolutely not, this is a complete fabrication and not a practice of Scientology.\u00a0 What L. Ron Hubbard actually said about the matter is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cScientology parents make the baby part of the family at once.\u00a0 They start talking to the baby.\u00a0 They usually make very, very sure that the baby didn\u2019t have a rough passage prenatally and that the baby had a decent and easy birth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When a child arrives, the normal thing they tell the child is, \u201cWell, how are you?\u00a0 Glad you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And you\u2019d think offhand that this would simply be fond parental belief that the child was answering up, but it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You tell a little baby, if you\u2019re its parent, \u201cWe\u2019re going to keep you.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to keep you.\u201d\u00a0 And you always get a sigh!\u00a0 They\u2019re so happy about that.\u00a0 It\u2019s such a relief to them.\u201d \u2013 L. Ron Hubbard<br>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>IS IT A CHURCH RULE THAT THEIR MEMBERS MUST ADHERE TO THIS PRACTICE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not at all.\u00a0 A woman\u2019s delivery is always up to her and her doctor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DOES THE CHURCH HAVE RULES AGAINST PAINKILLERS, ANESTHESIA OR OTHER MEDICAL DRUGS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Church has no policy against the use of medicines to help a person with a physical situation. When it is a medical problem, it is up to the doctor and the patient.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DOESN\u2019T L. RON HUBBARD RECOMMEND\/ADVOCATES A NATURAL, DRUG-FREE BIRTH?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, because it is best for the mother and the child. It is common knowledge that natural childbirth is best, but that doesn\u2019t always work out, and it is up to the mother and her doctor.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT MANY SCIENTOLOGISTS WILL DEMAND A NATURAL CHILDBIRTH WITH NO DRUGS.\u00a0 WHY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is the mother\u2019s choice. If they don\u2019t use drugs it\u2019s simply because a mother wants the best for her new baby.\u00a0<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DO DOCTORS AGREE WITH THESE PROCEDURES?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course.\u00a0 It\u2019s a personal decision of the mother and doesn\u2019t interfere with any medical procedure.\u00a0 Doctors naturally respect the right of a mother to choose her own birth experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s and 1970s a number of popular natural child birth methods evolved from the principles of a calm, quiet and relaxed birthing environment and little or no anesthesia.\u00a0\u00a0 Two of the most well known and followed were the Bradley Method developed by Dr. Robert A. Bradley and the Leboyer Method developed by the French obstetrician Dr. Frederick Leboyer.<\/p>\n<p>The Leboyer Method includes dim lights and gentle handling without sudden movement that may jar or startle the baby.\u00a0 In his book\u00a0<em>Birth Without Violence,<\/em> Leboyer wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNothing could be simpler: be silent.\u00a0 Easy?\u00a0 Less so than it might seem.\u00a0 By nature we\u2019re talkers.\u00a0 Even when our lips are still, the interior monologue does not slow down.\u00a0 Besides, to be silent in someone else\u2019s company is so unsettling that we rarely attempt it.\u00a0 To be silent, attentive, to\u00a0<em>listen, <\/em>to hear that which is unspoken \u2013 all this demands great effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis apprenticeship of silence \u2013 so indispensable for mothers \u2013 is just as important for those who perform the delivery: the obstetricians, the attendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople speak loudly in the delivery room.\u00a0 The calls to \u201cpush, push\u201d are rarely whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo profoundly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese loud outbursts upset the mother more than help her.\u00a0 Lowered voices can relax her.\u00a0 And do far more for her than shouting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who assist in deliveries must learn this new silence.\u00a0 They too must be prepared to receive the child with care and respect.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bradley urges darkness and solitude, quiet, physical comfort and relaxation.\u00a0 He also teaches exercises and muscle relaxation for labor with slow, deep breathing, take-your-time approach in a quiet, unlit, pillow-laden environment.\u00a0\u00a0 In a 1965 he made the statement that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe warn husbands to be quiet and not disruptive, to rub the back between contractions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a book called\u00a0<em>The Secret Life of the Unborn Child, <\/em>Thomas Verny, M.D. wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[T]he unborn child is a\u00a0<em>feeling, remembering, aware <\/em>being, and because he is, what happens to him\u2014what happens to all of us\u2014in the nine months between conception and birth molds and shapes personality, drives and ambitions in very important ways.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A 1998 Swedish study found that \u201cminimizing pain and discomfort to the infant during birth seems to be of importance in reducing the risk of committing suicide by violent means as an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CAN YOU EXPLAIN FURTHER WHAT DIANETICS IS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L. Ron Hubbard discovered the single source of stress, worry, self-doubt and psychosomatic illness, which is the reactive mind.\u00a0 This part of the mind records all perceptions in times of pain and unconsciousness and in particular, words spoken during these moments can have very adverse effects on people later in life.<\/p>\n<p>Full information on this is available in the book,\u00a0<em>Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW DOES SCIENTOLOGY APPROACH PARENTING?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a lot written in Scientology about children, and more on this site.
