\"\"It\u2019s 100 degrees in LA today and it\u2019s \u201cflippin hot,\u201d as a friend of mine would say.<\/p>\n

This friend is very cute\u2014the way her statements of dislike and upset are peppered with the word \u201cflippin.\u201d\u00a0 Growing up in South Africa she was raised to be very \u201cproper.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I find it quaint and adorable.<\/p>\n

I, on the other hand, was part of the American late-60s iconoclast generation and embraced and reveled in using real <\/em>curse words as a form of \u201cliberation.\u201d<\/p>\n

I certainly never anticipated what that trend would lead to.\u00a0 Can\u2019t say that I like some of the results\u2014the gratuitous violence, the celebration of the mean and perverse.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a prude, but I cringe at some of today\u2019s lyrics and images.<\/p>\n

I was thinking\u2014am I just being \u201cold\u201d?\u00a0 (Good grief, how did that happen?)<\/p>\n

But I don\u2019t think so, really.<\/p>\n

I realized what I object to is not the language per se but the glorification of hatred for which it acts as a carrier wave.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
