\"Any<\/a>Any law that applies to the behaviour of men and women also applies to children.\u00a0\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s the simple fact that any law that applies to the behaviour of men and women\u00a0also applies to children<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s a datum that becomes more and more profound the more you think about it \u2013 and certainly the more you consider those laws that do apply to men and women \u2013 and also to that body of knowledge which covers the interaction of people in groups.<\/p>\n

One that I\u2019ve been seeing more and more of as my toddler gets more competent, is the action of something that Scientologists call the Condition of\u00a0Danger<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Danger Condition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To understand where this post is going, it\u2019s important to understand the concept of the Condition of Danger.\u00a0 Rather than attempt to sum it up in this post, this video explains it beautifully:<\/p>\n

This video<\/a> gives you the essence of each of the Conditions, but specifically the Condition of Danger, where the baker steps in when his junior baker doesn\u2019t know how to make a proper muffin, and then does his work for him.\u00a0\u00a0 In an unfortunate number of occasions, in the real world, the senior baker would just end up copping the work the junior baker couldn\u2019t handle, and would either fire him, or remain an overworked mess.\u00a0 The way out is through wittingly or unwittingly doing the steps of the Danger formula.<\/p>\n

Applying the Danger Formula to Parenting<\/strong><\/h3>\n

<\/strong>L. Ron Hubbard<\/a> had a lot to say about the Condition of Danger, and it was an important topic in a number of his essays on management.\u00a0 He brought up frequently not only the need to execute the Danger formula fully if a dangerous situation is encountered, but more importantly, how to avoid such conditions in the first place.<\/p>\n

In one such essay he wrote, written on 19 January 1966 and entitled,\u00a0Danger Condition \u2013 Responsibilities of Declaring<\/em><\/a>, Mr. Hubbard says:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026if you habitually do the work of others on a bypass, you will of course inherit all the work.\u00a0 This is the answer to the overworked executive.\u00a0 He or she bypasses.\u00a0 It\u2019s a simple as that.\u00a0 If an executive habitually bypasses, he or she will then become overworked.\u201d \u2014 LRH<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Simple enough to see in the context of an organization, or for that baker in the film above.\u00a0 But think of it in terms of being a parent.\u00a0 If you are always telling your child that you\u2019re \u201clate for work\u201d or \u201clate for school\u201d each morning, and as such always have to put your kids clothes on for them because they \u201ctake too long\u201d, you\u2019ll\u00a0always<\/strong> be doing that work, and it will never be\u00a0their job.\u00a0 If you are always cleaning up all their messes and refuse to just allow them to (even if they do a terrible job at it because they\u2019re two years old) \u2013 you\u2019ll cop the work they don\u2019t do. I don\u2019t know about most parents, but I\u2019m rather looking forward to not having to do every last scrap of work related to my kids, and am hoping that as time goes on, I\u2019ll be more and more working myself out of a job as a parent \u2013 much the same as any executive would want to work himself out of a job of having to do all of the lower jobs under him.<\/p>\n

This principle has been absurdly evident for me, with my daughter.\u00a0 She will ferociously defend her ability to do something on her own \u2013 be it tying her shoes, cleaning up after she\u2019s spilled something, putting on her undies, buckling her seatbelt, etc.\u00a0 Anything that she knows how to do, and feels that it\u2019s within her purview to actually do it, she\u00a0wants to do<\/strong>, and\u00a0without intervention<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But it does seem to be a key point in parenting \u2013 and key alignment with what one is\u00a0generally<\/em>trying to do in Scientology counselling:\u00a0 you\u2019re not trying to make the child \u201cobey\u201d or \u201clearn a lesson\u201d or subjugate them or make them less annoying or any other bizarre tack on child-rearing.\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to make it so that they are responsible for themselves, are responsible for their own future, and can move on to create their own life.<\/p>\n

As such, the technology contained in Mr. Hubbard\u2019s writings on Danger Conditions is something I feel any parent would do well to study fully, and work out for themselves how to apply to parenting.<\/p>\n
