Here is the welcome note published in the conference program for today\u2019s theology conference:<\/p>\n
Welcome to the inaugural meeting of the Los Angeles\u00a0Theology Conference, an annual gathering devoted to\u00a0the discussion of major doctrines of systematic theology.\u00a0Thank you for joining us in this first year, when we take up\u00a0the central doctrine of christology.<\/p>\n
A theology conference is too serious and too scholarly a\u00a0thing to be considered a party, but there is nevertheless\u00a0something festive about gathering with others to hear\u00a0their arguments and investigations into these important\u00a0matters of doctrine. Theologians, like all scholars, have to\u00a0read and write alone before publishing their results for\u00a0others to (eventually) see and (maybe) respond to. But a\u00a0good conference is a space where the people who read\u00a0and write Christian theology come face-to-face, to encounter each other and exchange ideas more directly.\u00a0Question and answer come closer together than print\u00a0permits. There is a podium, and for once a minor element\u00a0of performance enters into what is ordinarily an art\u00a0confined to the studio. It is no surprise that at this more\u00a0human scale, we often catch a glimpse of the attitude\u00a0most appropriate to practitioners of what Karl Barth\u00a0called the \u201cmodest, free, critical, and happy science.\u201d<\/p>\n
We have tried to make this conference exactly the kind of\u00a0thing we would enjoy attending, in hopes that everyone in\u00a0attendance would benefit from it as well. We have already\u00a0begun planning the themes, speakers, and arrangements\u00a0for future meetings of the LATC, so please think of this\u00a0conference as an event you can plan for in coming years.<\/p>\n
