In my first two posts on this issue I have argued that the Church matters…and that it matters to your children.   I offered the first reason for why I believe this to be true in the last post: The Church matters because it matters to Jesus. The Church is a matter of life and death and life for Jesus. He is deeply committed to it and in fact, stakes his reputation on it in many ways. The Church is... Read more

As I cited in my first post on this subject, church attendance among Christians has been in serious decline. Where a generation ago those considered “regulars” attended 3-4 times per month, today “regulars” attend once every 4-6 weeks! And these are people who are committed to Jesus. We live in a society today where Sunday is no longer sacred. In addition to shopping, movies, and football, increasingly sports practices and games and recitals now take place on Sunday morning. Philip Yancey, in his book, What’s so Amazing About Grace, opens up with a gut-wrenching story about a man who was approached by a prostitute in Chicago. She was homeless, broke, sick, and unable to feed her 2-year-old daughter. Through tears of shame she admitted that she had been renting out her daughter in order to support her own drug habit. After the man got over his initial shock, he asked her: “Why don’t you go to a church for... Read more

The headline for the March, 16, 2015 edition of the Arizona Republic trumpeted these words: Closing the Phoenix Gender Gap. Before offering the subtitle I’m guessing the overwhelming majority of you already know the theme of the article. The subtitle: Council task force aims to use existing laws to address wage inequality for women. Whenever the words, Gender Gap, are used, it almost universally refers to women and the systems, thinking, laws, mindsets, etc., that keep them from being treated equally... Read more

(Many great books have been written recently about how to be more intentional in forging faith in the home. Most so far have been written by female authors and while inclusive, tend to speak better to moms and women. Over the next several weeks I want to speak to dads in male language about their unique call to forge faith in their kids. My hope is to turn this into a free e-book. So comments, suggestions, ideas, along the way... Read more

(Excerpt from Sunday Schooling Our Kids Out of Church! The True Story of How One Congregation Dropped Sunday School to Save its Soul.) I was the Associate Pastor of a large, Lutheran, Seeker-driven congregation in the Phoenix area from 1984-March 2005. And I loved every minute of it! Every day was energized by the creative passion to find new ways to connect with people disconnected from the church. My particular area of focus was on the Seeker Worship Service. Each... Read more

The Lincoln Public School system recently trained its teachers to create a gender-neutral, or gender-inclusive, environment in their classrooms (and don’t let the fact that FOX News broke the story take away from the fact that this is a real story—see this link from the JournalStar.) The intent of the training, according to the higher ups, is to deal with bullying and to create a safe place for kids who don’t fall into the stereotypical male or female mold, i.e.,... Read more
