And
\n<\/em>all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron
\n<\/em>and
\n<\/em>the whole congregation said to them,\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI
\n<\/em>wish we had died in the land of Egypt or that we had already died in this wilderness!\u201d
\n<\/em>(Numbers 14:2)<\/p>\n

Fear
\nis not an animal.
\nIt
\nis not warm.
\nIt
\ndoes not bend.<\/p>\n

Once
\nthe ocean bent
\nbeneath
\nmy hand.
\nWas
\nit that simple?
\nYes.<\/p>\n

The
\ncrabs and fish
\nfelt
\nthe dawn of their apocalypse.
\nThe
\nground we walked on
\nwas
\na moving thing, fins and shells
\nspread
\nout beneath our feet.<\/p>\n

Now
\nI would offer
\nall
\nmy songs of praise
\nin
\nexchange
\nfor
\na fish in my hand.<\/p>\n

While
\nI walk, I dream
\nof
\ntranslucent muscle and silvery scales.
\nWhile
\nI walk, I clutch a stone
\nand
\nwill it to become water.<\/p>\n

Fear
\nis this stone in my hand.
\nFear
\nis this stone in my mouth.<\/p>\n

If
\nstones do not turn to water,
\ndid
\nwater ever become dry land?<\/p>\n

The
\nsky over my head
\nis
\nneither land nor water
\nand
\nit does not speak a word.<\/p>\n
