{"id":117,"date":"2013-01-30T01:33:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-30T06:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oshetablogs.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/30\/third-way-womanhood-pt-3"},"modified":"2013-01-30T01:33:00","modified_gmt":"2013-01-30T06:33:00","slug":"third-way-womanhood-pt-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/shalominthecity\/2013\/01\/third-way-womanhood-pt-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Way Womanhood Pt.3"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">So here we go, part three of \u201cThird Way Womanhood\u201d. \u00a0Last week I wrote about my experiences with what I called, \u201cThe Fearlessly Feminine\u201d camp (and can I just say, even with a whole week of working on that post and consequentially writing the word \u201cfeminine\u201d like a billion times\u2014I still manage to misspell it. \u00a0Thank God for spell check!). \u00a0This week, I\u2019m going to share my experiences with what I will call the \u201cLiberated Christian Woman\u201d camp or LCW for short. \u00a0The titled \u201cliberated woman\u201d comes from Rachel Held Evans, a leader of this group, who identified herself as such in her recent New York Times Bestseller, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Year-Biblical-Womanhood-Liberated-Covering\/dp\/1595553673\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How A <b>Liberated Woman<\/b> Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof and Calling her Husband \u201cMaster\u201d<\/a> (emphasis mine). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>\u201cAt first I was afraid; I was petrified\u201d Gloria Gaynor<\/b><\/span><br><a href=\"https:\/\/oshetablogs.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/holyburningbra1.jpeg?w=245\" style=\"clear:left;float:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-right:1em;\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/oshetablogs.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/holyburningbra1.jpeg?w=245\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The only thing I knew about this camp of women who asked hard questions and didn\u2019t take platitudes as viable answers, was that most of them were (gasp) egalitarian which means that most of them were \u00a0(clutch my chest in horror) feminists. \u00a0Feminists were so vilified by the other camp as women who have rejected the Word, that in the beginning of my foray into liberated Christian womanhood, I was incredibly nervous.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Confession: the first few months of learning from Liberated Christian Women, I made sure to wear my Targ\u00e9t bras instead of my fancy Vicki S. <\/span><i style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">brassieres<\/i><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">, just in case the power of their words caused me to break out into a bra-burning fit of ecstasy. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Just kidding. Maybe. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">In any case, I found that stereotype to be untrue, so I settled in (fancy bras and all), added their blogs to my RSS reader, and sighed with relief. I thought I had finally found my home with the Liberated Christian Women. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">These women are impressive. \u00a0Truly. \u00a0As Elizabeth Bennett says in the 2005 version of \u201cPride and Prejudice\u201d, such accomplished women are \u201c\u2026a fearsome thing to behold\u201d. \u00a0 They are scholars, intellectuals, activists, writers, and professionals. They are plucky, strong-willed, rebellious, and courageous. \u00a0They are the stuff of legendary heroines. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Which is why I gravitated towards them when I realized I didn\u2019t quite self identify as \u201cFearlessly Feminine\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>\u201cAll of me, why not take all of me?\u201d \u00a0Billie Holiday<\/b><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0When I think of these women, I think of Jesus\u2019 teaching in the first part of Luke 10:27 where he gives us the \u201cCliff Notes\u201d on a life that pleases God. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i>\u201cLove the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">This holistic approach to faith that Jesus teaches is a game changer and the Liberated Christian Women do this incredibly well.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I love the way they\u2019ve married intellect and faith\u2014worshipping God with their minds and not just their mouths. \u00a0I love the way their passion to reject social mores in the same way as Christ causes them to seek <a href=\"http:\/\/osheta.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/shalom-seeking.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">God\u2019s Shalom<\/a> in this broken world. They are using their strength and privilege to<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachelheldevans\/status\/289154213588656129\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> \u201cget stuff done\u201d<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The LCW looks a lot like Christ and a<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">s a \u201cThird Way Woman\u201d who values Christ-likeness first and culture second, I\u2019m inspired by these women to jump up and down in applause. \u00a0<i>You go girls!<\/i><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>\u201cLet me upgrade u\u201d Beyonce<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Unfortunately for the LCW, with great enlightenment, comes the temptation to be proud and arrogant. When we allow ourselves to get our life and identity from what we know and how well we can communicate it, the same destructive spirit of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mommy-%20Wars-Stay-at-Home-Choices-Families\/dp\/0812974484\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mommy wars<\/a> creeps in and creates an unnecessary tiered system of acceptance. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Within in the LCW camp it looks like this:\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">If you say\u2026 write strongly worded articles calling chauvinist pastors to account, speak of hierarchy like it\u2019s the machinations of the devil himself, and throw in comments like, \u201cI hate the Proverbs 31 woman\u201d\u2014then you, my dear, are at the top. \u00a0Your Disqus comments will get \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=big%20ups\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">big ups\u201d<\/a> and you\u2019ll be hailed as a truly, liberated woman.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">If you say\u2026write eloquently about oppressed women in third world countries, have pictures of your recent trip to Africa on your website, and raise money to build orphanages or schools for starving children \u2014then you, my dear, are the darlings of this camp. \u00a0You\u2019ll get speaking invitations, you\u2019ll raise tons of money, and the ladies on the top tier will write blog posts about you, calling you a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rachelheldevans.com\/blog\/women-of-valor-contest\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">woman of valor\u201d<\/a>.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">But, if you are in this camp and you choose to submit to your husband because of Christ\u2019s example, you want to be a great homemaker so that your home can be a place of ministry to all who enter, and you view your motherhood as a ministry to your children \u2014then you\u2019d better keep that to yourself. Quote Ephesians a lot and throw in an anecdote about your hatred of cleaning for good measure. <i>Shhhh\u2026<\/i>keep it a secret that you\u2019re truly this way because if they catch wind that you affirm a more traditional expression of femininity then you, my dear, may be pitied. \u00a0Some of them may even make it their labor of love to correct your antiquated and misguided thinking\u2014hopefully upgrading you from an uninteresting housewife to a fiery, modern woman. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span> <span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">This reminds me of a scene in \u201cMona Lisa Smile\u201d. \u00a0Katherine Watson (played by Julia Roberts), is a modern, freethinking Berkeley graduate who accepts a position as an Art History professor at Wellesley College, a prestigious all girls school in New England (not too far from Cambridge, where I live). The movie follows Watson as she challenges the girls to actualize their potential and be more than the homemaker and mother that was expected of a well-bred 1950\u2019s woman. \u00a0When Watson learns that one of her most promising students, Joan Brandwyn would have to turn down her acceptance to Yale Law School to marry her boyfriend who got into Penn State, Watson sprang into well meaning liberated woman \u201cupgrading\u201d action. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mona Lisa Smile\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rQ1xOOyENmw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I can relate to Joan. To me this scene communicates the frustration of women who embrace more \u201cliberal\u201d ideologies, but make more \u201cconservative\u201d choices such as becoming homemakers, mothers, and wives, perfectly.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">In my case, \u00a0I\u2019ve chosen to stay home, express my femininity in more \u201dgirly\u201d ways, and submit to my husband, not to achieve a cultural standard or promise of a \u201cbiblical\u201d label, but because I did my homework and I processed them with God in prayer. I\u2019ve let my personality and passions inform these decisions and I\u2019m happy with my life. \u00a0I don\u2019t want to be pitied or \u201cupgraded\u201d by the LCW. \u00a0I want their encouragement as a sister in Christ and their respect as an equally liberated woman. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b><br><\/b><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>\u201cAll I\u2019m asking is a for a little respect\u201d Aretha Franklin<\/b><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I\u2019ve found the Liberated Christian Woman to have a great capacity for love and acceptance. I am so impressed with Rachel Held Evan\u2019s humility to learn from those who are different than her, especially right now as she\u2019s processing, Justin Lee\u2019s book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rachelheldevans.com\/blog\/torn-chapters-1-5-what-happens-when-god-boy-is-gay\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Torn<\/a>\u201d with her online community. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">She\u2019s bridging gaps with her respectful tone and honest conversations.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">But I have to ask\u2026<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Where are the respectful and honest conversations for women who embrace submission <i>and<\/i> feminism? \u00a0Where are the respectful conversations about the spirituality of homemaking? \u00a0Where is the respectful and honest conversation that there may be a negative knee-jerk reaction against more traditional expressions of femininity because of wounds dealt from overeager \u201cbiblical women\u201d?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">As Evans has shown us, we can bridge the gaps with respectful conversations between seemingly opposite groups within the Body. She said some lovely things on holy homemaking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/women\/2012\/november\/holy-homemaking-response-from-rachel-held-evans.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>, but maybe we need more than a soundbite. Maybe an \u201cask a stay at home mom\u2026.homemaker\u2026.submissive wife\u2026etc.\u201d is in order. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>\u201cSisters O sisters, let\u2019s stand up right now\u201d Yoko Ono<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Jesus\u2019 last prayer in the garden of Gethsemane before heading to the cross was that we\u2019d be unified as He is with the Father.\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\"><br><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved\u00a0me.<\/span><\/i><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">John 17:20-23<\/span><\/i><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\"><br><\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">According to Jesus, our unity as believers, in spite of our differences, will transform the world as we love one another unconditionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"background-color:#f9fdff;color:#001320;line-height:21px;text-align:justify;text-indent:25px;\"><br><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sisters, o sisters, let\u2019s stand up together and \u201cget stuff done\u201d. \u00a0Let\u2019s stand up against injustice as one Body of women on a mission. \u00a0Let\u2019s recogni<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ze the pea-brained attempts of the enemy to distract us with suspicion, arrogance, bitterness, and pride towards our sisters that only serves to hinder authentic connection and prevents the creation of Shalom for the hurting.<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>I am a Third Way Woman, a\u00a0reconciling\u00a0woman, and that makes me a biblical woman. \u00a0<\/b><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Even before the cross, the bedrock of Jesus\u2019 ministry was\u00a0reconciliation: reconciling\u00a0us to God and teaching us to reconcile with one another. Think of the disciples. Why else would Jesus invite a tax collector and a zealot into the same community and then commission them to \u201cgo and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit\u201d (Matthew 28:19), if he didn\u2019t expect them to work through their differences and become true brothers in the faith?\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">It probably wasn\u2019t easy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I imagine eyes were rolling and chests heaving in irritated sighs. I also imagine there were sweet moments of confession, forgiveness, and finally, \u00a0reconciliation before breaking bread in communion and reminding themselves for whom they did it all. \u00a0They did it in remembrance, deep reverence, and holy respect for their Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">It won\u2019t be easy for us too, \u00a0but as a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Third Way Woman, I pray for reconciliation between the Fearlessly Feminine and LCW camp. \u00a0I hope for honest, respectful conversations that end with both women proclaiming, \u201ceschet chayil\u201d of each other. I hope for spaces to break bread together in remembrance, deep reverence, and a holy respect for our Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#783f04;font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><i><b>Next week, I\u2019ll explore ways we can bring peace and reconcile with one another, in spite of our differences.
