When I read the prompt for today\u2019s Five Minute Friday was \u201cred\u201d, I immediately thought of this perfume.\u00a0 It\u2019s currently in my nightstand and it\u2019s one of the only scents I wear. With it\u2019s luxurious mixture of pomegranate, red osmanthius, rum, and (Ohmyword) marshmallow\u2014 it\u2019s perfect for me.\u00a0 I wear it all the time.\u00a0 To church.\u00a0 On dates.\u00a0 Out with friends.\u00a0 It\u2019s my<\/strong> scent.\u00a0\u00a0 And I wanted to write about it. \u201cLove-letter to Forever Red\u201d<\/strong> was what I initially thought.\u00a0 But, that didn\u2019t flow out of me like I hoped.\u00a0 This is the beauty of writing for five minutes \u2014 if I doesn\u2019t work, you\u2019ll know in the first few seconds<\/em><\/p>\n

Then I remembered the promo video I watched shortly after buying it and thought that might give a bit of inspiration for my five minutes.\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m that type of nerdy, that I research my products before and even after I buy them.\u00a0 Well, it worked. I pulled it up for you to give context before I set my timer.\u00a0 So today I give you, \u201cChoosing to be Forever RED\u201d<\/em>

Don\u2019t you want to be that girl?!?!?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t she all gorgeous with her modern Julia Roberts on the way to the opera dress?\u00a0 I know\u2026right! Persuasive marketing B&BW!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s puzzling to me though, is the title of the ad on the B&BW site<\/a>:\u00a0 \u201cHer story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wait!\u00a0 What?\u00a0 Her \u201cstory\u201d.\u00a0 Are you telling me this snapshot of baths, baubles, High-end gifts, cars, and hunks is her\u2026\u201dstory\u201d?<\/p>\n

No. I don\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 Her story is more than that. Her story is the heartbreak she suffered in ninth grade when her crush dumped her the night before homecoming.\u00a0 Her story is the tragic case of eczema she developed right before swimsuit season.\u00a0 Her story is the late nights on the phone mediating between girlfriends, soothing hurt feelings and re-interpreting misunderstood words.\u00a0 Her story is richer, deeper, better, and real-er than a sixty second promo of glamor.<\/p>\n

And I wonder how much of this do we do?\u00a0 How often do we market the forever glamorous, confident, sexy, knowledgeable, put-together us as \u201cour story\u201d.\u00a0 I wonder how often we let others believe the stories they form for the sixty second Sunday morning perfect ad we project.\u00a0 I wonder what would happen if we said, \u201chere is my story.\u00a0 It\u2019s marked with moments of red-faced embarrassment, and \u2018seeing red\u2019 rage fits, and red passion for people and ideas, and runny red noses from crying over my insecurities\u201d. What ways would we and our relationships be forever changed?\u00a0 I think dramatically.\u00a0 I think as dramatic as that dress and the way it flowed in the breeze.\u00a0 All natural and beautiful and striking.\u00a0 That\u2019s what marks story-telling as true, authentic, real\u2014the ways is flows naturally, creates beauty where there were ashes, and strikes the hearts of it\u2019s listeners.\u00a0 I want to live in that powerful, \u201creally real\u201d.\u00a0 Oh Lord,\u00a0 how often have I let others believe the superficial, promo ad of my life as \u201cmy story\u201d?\u00a0 Too often and I hope to change.\u00a0 Because I want to be Forever RED.\u00a0 Forever Real.\u00a0 Forever Exposed.\u00a0 Forever Daring.\u00a0 In all of my relationships.<\/p>\n
