SO, I found every reason to avoid writing this post!\u00a0 I even cleaned out parts of my fridge.\u00a0 For real. Racial reconciliation is some scary, scary business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Happy Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the deal, if you\u2019re a black woman and you don\u2019t feel safe to talk about this stuff with your friends, and you\u2019ve NEVER tried, then baby, the onus is on you.<\/p>\n<p>On me.\u00a0 The wimp over here writing beautifully about wanting to be \u201cwhite\u201d\u00a0 but scared to death to tell it to her white friends\u2019 face.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Affection Is Not Necessarily\u00a0Reconciliation\" href=\"http:\/\/oshetablogs.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/28\/affection-is-not-necessarily-reconciliation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Remember how I pointed you to Christena Cleveland\u2019s suggestion to view \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d with a cross racial audience and using it as a springboard for conversation and reconciliation?<\/a>\u00a0 Honestly,\u00a0 that\u2019s too much for me.\u00a0 I struggle with static images in history books on the brutality of the slave trade, so obviously, I can\u2019t handle a whole movie.<\/p>\n<p>Now I could wimp out again, but last Thursday when I was processing \u201cSometimes I wish I were White\u201d with Jesus, I asked him to show me what to do with all this emotion around race and beauty and then\u2026 I got\u00a0 Redbox free rental code.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking, \u201cyes! I can get a chick-flick for my vulnerability hangover\u201d,\u00a0 I rushed to the closest Redbox to find this documentary:<\/p>\n<p>Dark Girls:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dark Girls: Official Preview\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UW31Te1awVw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>I rented it, watched it and I cried like a baby, and then Jesus whispered, \u201cnow invite your friends over to watch it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Coupled with Christena\u2019s suggestion about\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2013\/11\/03\/years-slave-provides-essential-depiction-how-slavery-looked-its-victims\/O4RPcJjqyTO8WiObrj0CHL\/story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c12 Years A Slave\u201d ,<\/a> I told my writer\u2019s group about this scary idea they were all like, \u201coh yes, girl DO IT\u201d and so I said,\u00a0 \u201cok Jesus, time to pull up the big girl panties.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Today I sent this email out to my friends:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hey Friends,<\/p>\n<p>As some of you know this week on my blog, I\u2019ve been talking about racial reconciliation and creating safe spaces to have those types of conversations.\u00a0 I wanted to write you all because each of you is a very dear friend to me AND I\u2019ve been a very bad friend to you.\u00a0 Well\u2026wait\u2026let me take that back\u2026I\u2019ve been a good friend, but I haven\u2019t been a very honest friend.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been struggling with these issues of race, identity, safety, and unity for a while and I haven\u2019t invited any of you to process these issues with me.\u00a0 Most if not all of you, understand the subtle tension that lies just beneath cross-racial friendships, some of you have asked me off line, \u201chow do I talk about this without sounding stupid or insensitive\u201d, some have confessed to not engaging because you don\u2019t want to start drama.\u00a0 But all of you love and reflect Jesus in profound ways to me, so I want to reflect Jesus back to you by pulling up my big girl panties and inviting you all to my home on the first Saturday of December\u00a0 for a night of safe conversations around race, relationships and reconciliation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When I wrote, <a href=\"http:\/\/oshetablogs.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/25\/sometimes-i-wish-i-were-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cSometimes I Wish I Were White\u201d<\/a>, I sent it to my writer\u2019s group, got their feedback and then unplugged to just let Jesus speak into this hurting place in my heart.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>I laid down on a bench in Harvard Common underneath green, orange, yellow and red trees and marveled at the beauty when diversity is unified in one space.\u00a0 I thought of my bi-racial friends, white friends, Asian, Latino, and black friends and how we\u2019re really so different, but so much the same.\u00a0 We need the same things to thrive and survive.\u00a0 Like the trees need sunshine, rain, and pollinators, we need to be listened to, known, and loved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>So on December 7th, I hope you\u2019ll come. We\u2019ll watched, \u201cDark Girls\u201d one of the best documentaries I\u2019ve seen on the black women in America and beauty.\u00a0 Then we\u2019ll have a conversation that\u2019s so very close to my heart, \u201chow can we as Kingdom Women affirm beauty in a way that both honors who God made us to be (white, black, brown, tan, etc.) and acknowledges the brokenness in the world that contributed to those insecurities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>In short, I\u2019m inviting you my friends to enter into the \u201cother\u201d, like Jesus entered into the \u201cother\u201d of humanity when he left Heaven. I\u2019m not doing this because I want to start drama or make things tense or have space to call you a racist or ignorant to your face.\u00a0 No, I want to create a safe space to talk these things through because I love you and want to share all of myself with you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>So, please pray and look at your calendars and if you are at all free, please consider coming over.\u00a0 There\u2019s this ministry our denomination, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/justice\/racial-righteousness\/sankofa\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Evangelical Covenant Church<\/a> hosts, called, <i>\u201cSankofa\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><i>From the website:<br>\n<\/i><i> <\/i><\/p>\n<h4><i>A Journey Toward Racial Righteousness<\/i><\/h4>\n<p><i>The Sankofa Journey is an intentional, cross-racial prayer journey that seeks to assist disciples of Christ on their move toward a righteous response to the social ills related to racism. This interactive experience explores historic sites of importance in the Civil Rights movement and sites of oppression and inequality for people of color, while seeking to move participants toward healing the wounds and racial divide caused by hundreds of years of racial injustice in the United States.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>My sweet sisters, I\u2019m inviting you to a Sankofa night at my home. <em>S<\/em><em>ankofa <\/em>is a West African word meaning \u201clooking backward to move forward.\u201d\u00a0 Let\u2019s look back together at beauty, colorism, and identity and hopefully let\u2019s move forward together. Let\u2019s move forward together so that I know as your black friend you \u201cget me\u201d and so that you can let me hear your heart around these issues so I can \u201cget\u201d you.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, enough rambling. I\u2019m about to puke because this is such a scary invitation. But I love you and trust you all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now here\u2019s my scary invitation to you, Dear Readers:\u00a0 <strong>Host your own Sankofa Night before the end of the year.\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>Choose a movie that could springboard for safe, healthy conversation around race,\u00a0 invite your friends into your space, and ugly cry this out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks to come, I\u2019ll be posting some resources to facilitate discussion on your nights, movie suggestions, and prayers for reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on December 13<sup>th<\/sup>, come back here and tell me how it went OR if you have had an experience with\u00a0 honestly engaging in racial reconciliation share that with us, as I\u2019m hosting a <em>Sankofa<\/em> link up here, on \u201cShalom in the City\u201d.\u00a0 Let\u2019s encourage the heck out of each other to do the hard work of <a href=\"http:\/\/reknew.org\/2012\/07\/a-reknew-manifesto\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">rethinking humanity,<\/a> especially around racism.
