TRIGGER WARNING: Rape, Abuse<\/p>\n

This past week was the first time I let myself explore the Steubenville rape case.\u00a0 I say, \u201clet\u201d because the whole thing has \u201ctrigger\u201d written all over it.\u00a0 As a mother of boys this case triggers fear and anxiety.\u00a0 As a woman this case triggers outrage and repulsion.\u00a0 As a sexual abuse survivor this case triggers shame and self-hatred.
\nNot ready to face the firing squad of these triggers, I avoided the headlines and newscasts until I saw this picture:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/span>And read this response from Ma\u2019lik Richmond, one of the teens found\u00a0delinquent\u00a0in the rape of a 16 year old girl last summer:\n

\u201cNo one is going to want me now!\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p><\/span>And something broke in me.\u00a0<\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/div>\n

Once I uttered these same words in the aftermath of my abuse. Their pain became more real and more desperate because I could relate. \u00a0 So, I immersed myself in the details of their case\u2014damn the triggers, and allowed God to deactivated each and every one of them with his careful, loving hand.\u00a0Left with only my raw, vulnerable heart, a goal of peace this Lent,<\/a> and a Savior who specializes in restoring the broken, a post began to shape and form. \u00a0Given my newly deactivated triggers, this post on the Steubenville rape won\u2019t look like Ann Voskamp\u2019s, powerful open letter to her oldest son<\/a>, or Abby Norman\u2019s post about the day she taught her class how not to rape<\/a>, or even cover sexual abuse like Mary DeMuth\u2019s courageous post to the boys (now men) who abused her<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
This post will be different because\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m not angry.\u00a0 I\u2019m not horrified.\u00a0 I\u2019m not justified, anxious, or indignant. \u00a0Others are, but I\u2019m not. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m broken.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m heart-broken for these boys. R<\/span>egardless of what they\u2019ve done or what a court has ruled, Someone<\/b><\/span> does<\/b><\/i> want Ma\u2019lik Richmond and Trent Mays\u2014and they don\u2019t know it. \u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Someone wants them and it seems like the Body is silent on this truth. Maybe in an effort to side with justice, we\u2019re intentionally rejecting grace, but stripped down and bare before God about my abuse and my own sinfulness, I\u2019m too humbled to reject grace.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
You see, but for the grace of God, there goes I. \u00a0<\/span>But for the grace of God, there goes <\/span>my<\/i>oldest boy. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span>But, b<\/b><\/span>y<\/b> the grace of God, <\/b>He\u00a0wanted me and in light of this mercy, I\u2019m moved to stop and write this post that says, \u201c<\/span>SOMEONE WANTS THESE BOYS<\/i><\/b>\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Our beautiful Someone<\/b> \u2014who sought table fellowship with the chief tax collector and washed the feet of his betrayer wants Ma\u2019lik Richmond and Trent Mays. \u00a0<\/span>Our<\/span> humble Someone<\/b> who died while his closest friends scattered wants these boys. \u00a0<\/span>Our <\/span>scandalous Someone<\/b>whose greatest offense was the company he kept\u2014the lowlifes, the violent, the unclean, and the outcast,\u00a0wants to keep company with the\u00a0Steubenville\u00a0rapists.\u00a0<\/span>Open up any story of Jesus and this reality glares at us \u2014<\/span>Kingdom people are sinners that Someone wanted. \u00a0Tweet This\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span>So what\u2019s a good Anabaptist girl to do? In light of this truth, what should I do?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
When I\u2019m faced with the image of God doing the work of Satan, \u00a0how should I respond?<\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span>With love, goodness, and humility.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
As much as it\u2019s against my nature as a mama, a woman, and an abuse survivor, I believe the Kingdom response to these boys whose choices have made them my enemy is to love them and to be<\/span>\u00a0willing to take my lead from Jesus; our \u00a0Someone<\/b>, who washed the feet of his betrayer and prayed for his torturers\u00a0<\/span><\/span>forgiveness <\/span>while nailed to a cross.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Not to stroke my self-righteous ego, but to proclaim\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSomeone wants you!\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in response to Ma\u2019lik\u2019s desperate cry. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Enemy Love for the Steubenville Rapists<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
To say that loving my enemy has been wicked hard this Lent, would be an understatement.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
When I signed on with Jesus to embrace peace these forty days, I thought, \u2018cool, cool Lord.\u00a0 I\u2019m all types of stressed out and you\u2019re going to wave your magic hand, throw a \u201cpeace be still\u201d in there and peace is going to flow like a river! You know, that peace that surpasses all understanding. So\u2026let\u2019s do this.\u00a0 Peace me out, yo!<\/i>\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
But no, this Lent, peace is looking more and more like\u00a0<\/span>Jesus\u2019 teaching in Luke 6:32-36 that says in order to\u00a0<\/span>truly be at peace, I need to be a fast forgiver and a sure lover of my enemies.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

\u201cIf you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?\u00a0 Even sinners love those who love them.\u00a0 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you?\u00a0 Even sinners do that.\u00a0 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.\u00a0 But love your enemies, do good to them and lend to them without expecting to get anything back, then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.\u00a0 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. \u201c<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Couple this with these descriptions of God\u2019s mercy and I\u2019m undone:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span>\n

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/i><\/span>Daniel 9:9<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.\u00a0<\/i>Psalm 86:15<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m completely undone because I don\u2019t have forgiveness swagger like that!\u00a0 I\u2019m not slow to anger and quick to love. I enjoy clear lines of us\/them.\u00a0Sometimes,\u00a0<\/span>I like being a Christian<\/span>\u00a0because I get to be the good guy who fights for righteousness while my enemies stand wicked and unjust.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
But, this Lent I\u2019m\u00a0learning\u00a0that m<\/span>y enemy isn\u2019t just the person<\/span>\u00a0who has offended me, or the terrorist who haunts my nightmares, or the wicked sinner on the other side of the line. My enemy is the person whose actions, attitudes, and words are just beyond my empathy.<\/i><\/b> My enemy looks like Trent Mays, the white boy who had it all and threw it away or Ma\u2019lik Richmond the black kid in a hoodie who resembles my abuser and every villain in our society\u2019s\u00a0erroneous\u00a0cautionary tale of \u201choodlums and hooligans\u201d. \u00a0They are\u00a0<\/span>my enemies\u2014the perfect combination of past hurts and future fears\u2014the ones just beyond my empathy.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I didn\u2019t get that until I paid closer attention to the Steubenville case. I didn\u2019t get that until I chose to see the people behind the offense.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Now, these verses directly challenge my assumptions and ask me to love them, to be more gracious than common courtesy, and to be merciful as my Father is merciful. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Jesus asks me to do it and so I will. Not just for my peace and not just for his glory, but for their redemption\u2014 l will love these boys<\/span>\u00a0even though they did something wholly un-loveable. Our faithful, unconditonal love for our enemies has the power to spread the Gospel that:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Jesus wants them. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Jesus died for them. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Jesus loves them. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span>And we are in danger of dishonoring him by picking up the sword of angry, accusatory words when he\u2019s prepared to\u00a0sacrificially\u00a0love <\/span>and accept<\/i> them. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Washing the Feet of the Steubenville Rapists<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Last week as I was researching the Steubenville rape, this photo was tweeted, shared, and marveled as the most profound example of Christ-like love from the new Pope.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
It wasn\u2019t a coincidence that these pictures, Ma\u2019lik crying over his offense and the Pope washing the feet of teenage offenders circulated in the same newsweek.\u00a0This is the heart of Jesus! \u00a0He got down and washed the feet of his disciples, including Judas, to show his great love for them.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m reminded of my favorite post from\u00a0Greg Boyd about washing the feet of our enemies<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\u201cKnowing all power had been given to him, John says, he wrapped a towel around his waist and washed the dirty, smelly feet of people he knew would deny and betray him in a couple hours (Jn 13:3-5).<\/i><\/span>\u00a0Knowing he could call legions of angels to vanquish his foes, the real Jesus rather chose to let them crucify him, because this is what they needed him to do (though they of course didn\u2019t know it). Then, with his last breath, the real Jesus prays to his Father to\u00a0forgive\u00a0his barbaric torturers \u2014 and all of us (Lk 23:34).<\/i><\/span>\u00a0This\u00a0is the kind of power the omnipotent God of the universe uses against his enemies. And\u00a0this\u00a0is the kind of power we\u2019re to use against our \u201cenemies.\u201d It\u2019s the power of Calvary-like love.<\/i>We\u2019re called to imitate the Jesus who washes the feet of enemies, dies for them, and prays for their forgiveness. We are to \u201clive in love, as\u00a0<\/i><\/span>Christ loved us and gave his life for us\u2026\u201d (Eph. 5:1-2). When we were enemies, Jesus nevertheless ascribed unsurpassable worth to us by paying an unsurpassable price for us. We who claim we are his disciples are called to do the same. We\u2019re to sacrificially ascribe unsurpassable worth to all people, including our enemies \u2014 even Osama Bin Laden\u2019s feet<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In light of God\u2019s servant love toward us, we must be willing to wash Osama\u2019s\u00a0 feet \u2014and pray for his forgiveness.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I want take this call and apply it to the Steubenville rapists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
In light of God\u2019s servant love towards us, we must be willing to wash Trent May\u2019s feet.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
In light of God\u2019s servant love towards us, we must be willing to wash Ma\u2019lik Richmond\u2019s feet <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
And pray for their forgiveness.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
So I\u2019ll end this post with three questions and one prayer:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
1: Are you, Kingdom person, you who have been extended great mercy, and who was once an enemy of God but now called his friend, willing to love the Steubenville rapists?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
2: Are you, Kingdom person, you who has been forgiven much, who Jesus has cleansed with his blood and offered forgiveness under the shadow of the cross, willing to wash the feet of the Steubenville rapists and pray for their forgiveness?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
3: Will you join me in proclaiming that although these boys\u2019 actions were despicable, they are not defined by it\u2014 they are fellow image bearers of the Most High. They are WANTED by a glorious Someone and (hopefully) by us?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
If so, please join me in this prayer for them:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Beautiful Jesus,<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We are all so unworthy of your sacrificial, servant love for us.\u00a0\u00a0What you endured on Calvary at the hands of people you dearly loved is far beyond any offense any of us, including Ma\u2019lik and Trent could do.\u00a0\u00a0Yet you forgave.\u00a0\u00a0You called out for forgiveness as blood, sweat, tears, and life seeped from your body. We call out for forgiveness now for these two boys.\u00a0\u00a0Let forgiveness wash over them. \u00a0Empower us to forgive them, even though it\u2019s hard. They have unsurpassable worth, because you ascribed unsurpassable worth to them. \u00a0And it has nothing to do with how fast and far they can throw a ball. \u00a0Remind us that just as your forgiveness does not negate the severity of our sin, our forgiveness does not negate the severity of theirs. But where sin increases, grace increases all the more.\u00a0\u00a0These boys need to know that. \u00a0They need to know\u00a0you love them. They need to know you want them<\/b>. \u00a0So much so, that even as they sinned, your heart broke for them. Lord, break our heart for what breaks yours.<\/b> They have walked through the dung and mire of this sin. Let our prayers wash their feet.\u00a0\u00a0Protect them over the next few years as they continue walking in the consequences of this horrible choice.\u00a0\u00a0Place believers convicted to proclaim that Trent and Ma\u2019lik are acceptable to you close to them, so that you, oh great Restorer, can take what the enemy meant to harm them, their victim, and their community and use it for good.<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We ask this in your Name, Jesus.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Amen.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
