My husband and I celebrated our ten year anniversary this past February! Naturally, I\u2019ve been reflecting on our relationship and the lessons we\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 The greatest hurdle we\u2019ve had wasn\u2019t evacuating from New Orleans, but learning how to navigate life as an interracial couple.\u00a0 So when Sarah Bessey, the author of\u00a0 \u201cJesus Feminist:An Invitation for Revisit the Bibles View of Women\u201d\u2014<\/a>one of my favorite book in 2013\u2014 invited me to reflect on a discussion question for her week-long book club, I wanted to write on marriage, submission, and racial reconciliation.\u00a0 Join me today on telling a new narrative about gender roles & racial reconciliation.\"book-club-600x400\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I knew I would marry a white boy even before my Mama told me so.<\/em><\/p>\n

Maybe it was my wall covered with pictures of Jonathan Knight, the shy, sweet older\u00a0brother of New Kids on the Block that tipped her off. I did have a small picture\u00a0of Boyz II Men next to my desk to balance out the overwhelming white boy love\u00a0fest, but since it shared a page with a New Kid\u2019s interview\u2014it didn\u2019t really count.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was quite possibly the many stories of my school day that included me gazing at,\u00a0daydreaming about, or nervously working next my middle school crush, the popular\u00a0pre-teen Adonis with blonde hair and blue eyes.\u00a0I think I showed her my cards when I asked my mom while reading \u201cLittle Women\u201d\u00a0if Laurie would have fallen in love with me even though I was a black little woman.<\/em><\/p>\n

I think she suspected it was time to liberate the white boy lover in me when I tried\u00a0to convince her I found black boys cute with an insincere off hand comment.\u00a0\u201cMama, you know, Steve Urkel is kinda cute when he\u2019s Stefan Urquelle,\u201d I\u00a0commented as Jaleel White seamlessly switched from America\u2019s favorite nerdy next-door neighbor to his sleek, intelligent and charming altar ego after drinking \u201cCool\u00a0Juice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Honey!\u201d my mama said. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna marry a white boy!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Searching the bowl for the coveted slightly popped kernels we called, \u201ccrunchies,\u201d she looked up and simply replied, \u201cBecause that\u2019s all you look at.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

From that day on, I never felt bad about only dating white boys. It wasn\u2019t a\u00a0conscious decision as much as a comfortable preference. The same way I only wear\u00a0flip-flops in the summer or cotton scarfs over silk.\u00a0I knew what I liked and confidently moved towards that.<\/em><\/p>\n

In all my years of dating white men and praying about the intricacies of having bi-racial children, I overlooked one problematical reality of marriage: someday as a\u00a0\u201cbiblical Christian woman\u201d I\u2019d have to submit to one, even if it\u2019s mutual. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I, a black\u00a0woman, would have to bend my will to a white man.<\/em><\/p>\n
