{"id":2822,"date":"2014-10-02T12:12:03","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T12:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oshetablogs.wordpress.com\/?p=2822"},"modified":"2014-10-02T12:12:03","modified_gmt":"2014-10-02T12:12:03","slug":"open-when-you-need-a-new-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/shalominthecity\/2014\/10\/open-when-you-need-a-new-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Open When You Need a New Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oshetablogs.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/31daysbigger1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2825 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oshetablogs.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/31daysbigger1.jpg\" alt=\"31daysbigger\" width=\"600\" height=\"581\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, I\u2019m thankful for my unique name.\u00a0 Sometimes not.\u00a0 Sometimes I love the instant conversation starter and sometimes I I grow weary of the questions about my nationality, the origin of my name, the correct spelling, the insinuation that I\u2019m somehow more interesting than most because my name is different.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I feel exactly like Daysha and Chantel:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"9 Struggles Of Having A Unique Name\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YrIz_MdLaM4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>(funny aside, spell check is going all catywompus with this post: UNIQUE NAMES CAUSE ALL THE RED SWIGGLY LINES!)<br>\nI have experienced all the struggle of having a unique name including one not mentioned:\u00a0 My name has no meaning.\u00a0 The name \u201cOsheta\u201d is a combination of my father\u2019s past and his future hopes and yet, it doesn\u2019t reflect me at all.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve carried the burden of creating a new meaning for this very different name.<br>\nSince I didn\u2019t have baby books and bible characters to tell me my name\u2019s meaning, I looked to my family to craft the etymology of \u201cOsheta\u201d.<br>\nWhen I was five and noticed my mama didn\u2019t have a ring on her finger,\u00a0 I paid close attention to my older brother.\u00a0 Occasionally he\u2019d scowl in my direction, sneer when he said my name, called at me with such a derision, I wondered, \u201cWhy doesn\u2019t my own brother love me?\u201d I soon found out when I heard him yelling at our father, \u201cYou brought that woman and her child into our lives.\u00a0 She shouldn\u2019t be here.\u00a0 She ruined our family dad!\u00a0 You ruined our family by cheating on Ma.\u201d<br>\nMy mama was the \u201cother woman\u201d and my brother, my half-brother blamed me for his broken family.\u00a0To my little five year old mind, this made complete sense.\u00a0 I was the first child of the affair.\u00a0 The pregnancy that bore me, ushered in betrayal and grief for an unsuspecting family.\u00a0 Mistake.\u00a0 Unplanned.\u00a0 Sinful.\u00a0 The very knitting together of my heart and bones in my mother\u2019s womb was wrong.\u00a0 At least, that\u2019s what I thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And when I called myself, \u201cMistake\u201d my little five, six, seven, eight, nine and all the way to thirteen year old self acted like a mistake\u2014 I lived into that name.\u00a0<\/strong> I all klutzy and akimbo. Stutters and shyness. Quiet and unsure.<\/p>\n<p>Then an older woman at church noticed me studying the Bible, asking honest questions, praying loudly, trying to get the God who specializes in brokenness restoration\u00a0 to notice me so\u00a0 she sat me down and said, \u201cOsheta, I see you.
