<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This has been a poignant week around race for me.\u00a0 I worked on the chapter for <a href=\"http:\/\/shalominthecity.com\/2016\/08\/18\/big-book-news-and-the-blog-that-went-away-but-came-back-awesome\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cShalom Sistas\u201d<\/a> about body image and embracing my identity as a black woman and watched the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80091741\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">13th by Ava DuVernay on Netflix.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was fantastic. Well made, fast moving, informative and stirring. <strong>I was crying by the end.<\/strong> It was one of the most powerful, \u201cme too\u201d moments I\u2019ve had on this journey towards racial wholeness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4538\" src=\"https:\/\/shalominthecity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/the13th_27x40_1sheet_1d8edd9512a4a1bf9101f495aab9cd9b.nbcnews-ux-2880-1000.jpg\" alt=\"the13th_27x40_1sheet_1d8edd9512a4a1bf9101f495aab9cd9b-nbcnews-ux-2880-1000\" width=\"676\" height=\"1000\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But what made this week especially hard for me was the racial profiling I experienced at not one, not two, but THREE different stores.\u00a0 Three different places. I was carded for my ID after putting in my pin while waiting for the approval\u2014 why?\u00a0 Twice I was stopped to have my cart searched\u2014 unbelievable.<\/p>\n<p>I truly believe this week I experienced, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/racial-profiling-definition\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">racial profiling. Here\u2019s a definition of from the ACLU:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"_Tgc\"><b>Racial Profiling<\/b>\u201d refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual\u2019s <b>race<\/b>, ethnicity, religion or national origin.<br>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I tried to give the benefit of the doubt\u2014 I did, but there\u2019s only so much mistrust you can take when you\u2019re out and about in the world before you begin to wonder\u2014 is there something broken in retail? Today,\u00a0 instead of offering help an associate chose to criminalize me\u2014 this is wrong. And we have to do something about it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been wondering if retail managers are willfully ignorant to racial bias because they value the dollar more than people\u2019s dignity?<\/p>\n<p>My white husband told me this evening these types of things never happen to him.\u00a0 It was simultaneously validating and heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do we do?\u00a0 As Shalom seekers, we not only identify the brokenness we move towards it with a strategy for wholeness. If you are a person who has never experienced the embarrassment of racial profiling at the store, can I suggest three Shalom Steps for when you see racial profiling that will validate the person of color and challenged hurtful assumptions?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4537\" src=\"https:\/\/shalominthecity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ShalomStepsRacialProfiling.png\" alt=\"shalomstepsracialprofiling\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h4>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2013<\/h4>\n<h4>1: Watch the interaction<\/h4>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When you notice a person of color stopped, searched, and\/or carded,\u00a0 watch the interaction. Pay attention to how the associate interacts with other customers. If you see them card and search others then it may just be store policy and not necessarily profiling,\u00a0 but if the person of color was singled out, then\u2026<\/div>\n<h4>2: Take notes<\/h4>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Note the name of the associate, note the time of day, the busyness of the store, the particulars of the interaction. Write them in your notes app or on a piece of paper.\u00a0 That way you\u2019re prepared to\u2026<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>3: Stand in solidarity:<\/h4>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When it\u2019s your turn to ring up, pull out your ID and say something to the effect of,<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cI saw you carded that black mom with her kids just now, I guess you\u2019ve changed your policy to card all customers\u2014 even though I\u2019ve shopped here for years and it\u2019s never happened to me.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be prepared for now on.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>or if you\u2019re heading towards the exit stop that same associate and ask for your cart to be searched\u2014 open your purse, pull items out of your bag\u2014 make a big show of it and say,<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cI noticed you searched that man\u2019s cart even though he had a receipt in his hands\u2014 if you\u2019re going to search his things then search mine.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This will shine a light on their own bias and maybe spark a conversation giving you an opportunity to share why it\u2019s wrong and offensive to single out people of color.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>If you happen to see the person of color the parking lot, please say something kind to them.\u00a0<\/strong> A gentle,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cI saw what happened and it wasn\u2019t right. I hope you have a better rest of your day\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Can heal so much of the humiliation and anger that comes after being treated like a criminal when you simply wanted to pick up toilet paper, laundry detergent, and dish soap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can practice Shalom in the stores this way, Sistas. We\u2019re coming up on a holiday where you\u2019ll be in and out of stores. Keep an eyes for this and let the Spirit guide you to be peacemakers this season of peace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>I so believe in you and I\u2019m praying for you.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Pray for me to.
