\"when-a-train-goes-through-a-tunnel-and-it-gets-dark-you-dont-throw-away-the-ticket-and-jump-off-you-sit-still-and-trust-the-engineer-corrie-ten-boom\"<\/a>My mom posted this quote to my Facebook timeline this week right after the Marathon bombings.\u00a0 She knew I was shaken up and scared.\u00a0 You see, Boston is a mere 3 miles away from my house in Cambridge and our hearts are set on planting a church in that great \u201cstate of grace\u201d, so my mom posted a quote from one of my favorite writers. Hoping I\u2019m sure that encouraging me to trust God with both this tragedy and our calling to plant in Boston will calm my shaken soul.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t help.\u00a0 You see, initially I read that quote and thought \u2018oh my gosh!\u00a0 Sit still and trust the Engineer? Are you telling me our good and kind God engineered<\/i> this horror?!?\u201d Unthinkable.<\/p>\n

I \u201cliked\u201d it as a courtesy\u2014the perfunctory act of a daughter affirming her mother\u2019s maternal instinct from across the miles, but the thought \u00a0didn\u2019t sit right with me.<\/p>\n

But what if I\u2019m misinterpreting the \u201ctrust\u201d our Engineer is asking of us?\u00a0 What if the \u201ctrust\u201d isn\u2019t \u201ctrust me, I did this for a reason\u201d but, \u201ctrust me, I\u2019m with you no matter what?\u201d What if the Engineer is encouraging us to trust because he knows how to deftly navigate our fearful hearts through this dark time?\u00a0 What if trusting the Engineer looks like Jesus\u2019 encouragement that in this world we\u2019ll have tribulation but to take heart for he has overcome this world?<\/p>\n

Something about that rings true. It looks like Jesus who suffered evil because he knew there was a \u201clight at the end of the tunnel\u201d.\u00a0 So, I will not jump off this train, even though this track we\u2019re on forces me to face this tunnel of violence, fear, anxiety, and loss.\u00a0 I will be still and know that my Engineer is God. Even the darkness is light to him, so he can see, he can navigate, and he can overcome\u2014even in the darkest of tunnels.<\/p>\n
