To those outside the deaf community, the sign language interpreter for Nelson Mandela\u2019s memorial may have looked like he was working very hard, translating the spoken words into gestures for four hours.<\/p>\n

But he was a complete fake, and his actions outraged deaf people around the world, according to an association for the deaf community in South Africa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The interpreter, who stood next to President Obama and other world leaders as they delivered their speeches, was \u201cmoving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,\u201d Bruno Druchen [director of the\u00a0Deaf Federation of South Africa]\u00a0told the Associated Press.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yep. \u00a0Apparently he was just waving his hands around. \u00a0And now that you mention it, I have never seen a sign language interpreter spend so much time with his hands clasped over his tummy. \u00a0So what was he thinking on this solemn occasion, as he stood on stage with some of the world\u2019s most powerful political figures, commanding the attention of hundreds of thousands of people?<\/p>\n
