I think I may have picked some stuff that was a little young for him, but he will live (and his nine-year-old brother, who prone to settle for comic books, will definitely enjoy these). \u00a0Here is what I ordered (note: \u00a0the pictures may not neccessarily be from the same edition I\u2019m linking to. I just chose what I thought was the best illustration of the book):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0590045148\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0590045148&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>While Mrs. Coverlet Was Away<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/while-mrs-coverlet-was-away.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11900\" title=\"while mrs coverlet was away\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/while-mrs-coverlet-was-away.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"196\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0316598097\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0316598097&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Mrs. Coverlet\u2019s Magicians<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/mrs-coverlets-magicians.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11901\" title=\"mrs coverlets magicians\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/mrs-coverlets-magicians-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>both by Mary Nash. \u00a0Both of these are great reads, so weird and funny. \u00a0Three siblings, the boy with the complicated conscience, the slightly prissy girl, and the nakedly awful little brother Theobold, nicknamed \u201cThe Toad,\u201d find ways to subvert the tender care of their housekeeper, Mrs. Coverlet. \u00a0I read these as a kid and they totally held up. \u00a0Nice portrayal of realistic sibling relationships.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0803713460\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0803713460&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Great Brain Is Back<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/great-brain-is-back.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11907\" title=\"great brain is back\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/great-brain-is-back-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by John Fitzgerald. \u00a0This is the eighth in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=great%20brain&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the wonderful Great Brain series<\/a>, and I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve read this one yet. It does not appear to have been illustrated by Mercer Mayer, like the others, which is a shame. \u00a0If you\u2019re not familiar with the series, which tells of a Catholic family in Mormon Utah dealing with their intelligent, unscrupulous, money-grubbing son and his gullible younger brother, you should get a hold of them asap. \u00a0Great for sneaking in a little history, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0152060944\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0152060944&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Arabel\u2019s Raven<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/arabels-raven.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11906\" title=\"arabels raven\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/arabels-raven.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"277\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by Joan Aiken, illustrated by Quentin Blake \u00a0Just tons of fun. \u00a0I love anything by Joan Aiken. \u00a0Here she is just enjoying herself as a storyteller, following the antics of a nice girl and her unreliable pet, with lighthearted stories told in a remarkably sophisticated literary style. \u00a0Love how Aiken understands children, but doesn\u2019t talk down to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1590204697\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1590204697&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Freddy and the Spaceship<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/freddy-and-the-spaceship.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11905\" title=\"freddy and the spaceship\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/freddy-and-the-spaceship.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"138\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by Walter R. Brooks, illustrated by Kurt Weise. \u00a0I know <a title=\"Have you met Freddy the Pig?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/simchafisher\/2013\/01\/28\/have-you-met-freddy-the-pig\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019ve gone on and on about the \u201cFreddy the Pig\u201d series<\/a>. \u00a0We\u2019re slowly working our way through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=freddy%20the%20pig&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">t<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">he lis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=freddy%20the%20pig&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">t<\/a>, and haven\u2019t hit a dud yet. \u00a0Great for reading aloud for all ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0545162025\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0545162025&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Odious Ogre<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/odious-ogre.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11904\" title=\"odious ogre\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/odious-ogre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by Norton Juster, illustrated by Jules Feiffer. \u00a0Written and illustrated by the same guys who did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0394820371\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0394820371&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Phantom Tollbooth<\/a>, which my kids loved to death, even though I often had to explain both sides of the puns.\u00a0I actually heard this book was a bit of a disappointment, but even if it\u2019s not quite as good as tollbooth, that\u2019s still pretty good! \u00a0I\u2019ll let you know what we think.<\/p>\n<p>I also ordered a few books for myself:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802144179\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0802144179&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>So Brave, Young and Handome<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/so-brave-young-and-handsome.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11903\" title=\"so brave young and handsome\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/so-brave-young-and-handsome.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"277\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by Leif Enger. \u00a0I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802139256\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0802139256&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Peace Like a River<\/em><\/a> and was blown away. \u00a0It\u2019s one of those fascinating writing styles that teeters on the brink of magical preciousness, but never quite topples over the edge, and takes you to some amazing places. \u00a0<em>Peace Like a River<\/em> was so original and captivating, I\u2019m really looking forward to this newish book by Enger.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0141182350\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0141182350&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ihavtositdo03-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Kristin Lavransdatter III: \u00a0The Cross<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/kristin-lavransdatter-iii-the-cross.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11902\" title=\"kristin lavransdatter iii the cross\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2014\/01\/kristin-lavransdatter-iii-the-cross-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>by Sigrid Undset, translated by Tiina Nunnally. \u00a0I will admit that I had only the shakiest grasp on the plot in about 40% of part II. \u00a0The politics and the complicated family trees were just beyond me. \u00a0But I have the general idea, and I totally got the emotional end of the story, and I gotta find out what happens to Kristin.<\/p>\n<p>So!
