I don\u2019t know which I like more, the fact that these guys pulled over and played jazz for cows, or the fact that the cows were clearly digging it.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nThe dairy farm we visit always has the radio on in the cow barn. I don\u2019t know any music-deprived cows to which to compare our local cows, but our local gals do always seem calm and happy.<\/p>\nApparently it\u2019s an unsettled question, whether or not slow jams make cows give more milk. Here are some scientists doing their best to find out:<\/p>\nPIC music for cows<\/p>\nFrom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thesalt\/2014\/03\/06\/285314648\/secret-life-of-cows-part-deux-milking-mood-music\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">an NPR story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nAlas, the science of music and milking remains sketchy at best, says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agr.gc.ca\/eng\/science-and-innovation\/research-centres\/british-columbia\/pacific-agri-food-research-centre-agassiz\/scientific-staff-and-expertise-pacific-agri-food-research-centre-agassiz\/de-passille-anne-marie-phd\/?id=1181935452270\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anne Marie de Passille<\/a>, a Canadian research scientist who studies cow behavior and welfare.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nNo one has been able (or willing) to replicate a 2001 study that seemed to indicate that milk production goes up when cows are serenaded with soothing music of 100 beats per minute or slower.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n\u201cWhen you think about it, the chances that all cows would like the same music are really slim,\u201d [de Passille] says. \u201cI think they are individuals, and we didn\u2019t select them for their taste in music. \u2026 Why would they all like the same music?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\u00a0I feel, at any rate, that it\u2019s probably good for people to spend more time playing music for cows.
