One of the major perks of blogging at Patheos is that Elizabeth Scalia occasionally shares her dreams with us. As the lost sailor in the Dark Island says, \u201cNot daydreams: dreams<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

As much as I loved the dream where I served canned beans in the can at the event that wasn\u2019t no Edel Gathering<\/a>, Elizabeth dream the other night gave me even more pleasure. I\u2019ll tell Elizabeth tell it. \u00a0Oh, and for those of you \u00a0not familiar with Margaret Realy, blogger at Prayer Gardens<\/a> and author of soon to be four books, most recently\u00a0A Garden of Visible Prayer<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0I haven\u2019t spoken with her face to face, but my general impression is that she is . . . not loud.<\/p>\n

Oh \u2014 and I also appreciate how, even in her sleep<\/em>, Elizabeth is plugging her writers!<\/p>\n

I awoke from a dream in which\u00a0Simcha Fisher,\u00a0Margaret Rose Realy\u00a0and I were all doing \u201chome visits\u201d as part of some parish evangelical outreach. We were supposed to go to a house, introduce ourselves, say we\u2019d been trained by the parish and ask if they would like a blessing. That\u2019s all. We were just offering blessings to people. This lady opens the door and steps out into the beautiful sunlight with her little dog and says she\u2019d like a blessing for her dog.<\/p>\n

I tell her\u00a0we usually bless the animals ever October for Saint Francis Feast, and Simcha whispers to me, \u201clet\u2019s just bless the dog. It\u2019s evangelization. And my feet hurt!\u201d Margaret begins to bless the dog on her own, very loudly, and Simcha sits down on the woman\u2019s front step, wondering if the woman has any cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

When Margaret is done, I ask the lady if she would now like to be blessed. She looks doubtfully at Margaret, and says, \u201cDepends. Does it have to be loud, like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can bless you very quietly,\u201d I assure her.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we do the part about rejecting Satan?\u201d She asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the renewal of baptismal promises!\u201d Simcha says. \u201cI have bap-a-tized 15 children. Irene says \u2018bap-a-tized.'\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see why we can\u2019t let her renew her baptismal promises if she wants to,\u201d Margaret says. \u201cIn fact I think every blessing should require that. We should be eager to say \u2018I reject Satan and all of his works\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret is getting loud again, so I tell the woman, \u201csure, you can renew baptismal promises\u201d, and we lead her through it and when she\u2019s done I pronounce, \u201cthis is our faith, the faith of the church; we are proud to profess it,\u201d and then move into a standard blessing.<\/p>\n

Suddenly Margaret falls to the ground as though slain in the spirit, and begins shouting about how Christianity is painful and not a warm blanket but the cross, but she is willing to bear the cross.<\/p>\n

Simcha sits back down and starts looking at her swelling ankles. The woman lights a cigarette and, watching Margaret, asks \u201cwhat is this? Is it something new?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Flannery O\u2019 Connor,\u201d I tell her. \u201cShe must have read\u00a0Tod Worner<\/a>\u2018s latest piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

By now Margaret is shouting to the sky, \u201cTake me now, Jesus! If you want me this instant, I am yours!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman says \u201cI guess she and Jesus are having a moment\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Simcha says, \u201cI think her blood sugar is low, are there any cookies?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everyone\u2019s blood sugar is low. Margaret, get up. Let\u2019s go have ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, ice cream sounds nice,\u201d the lady says as her dog starts licking Margaret\u2019s face, and Margaret giggles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIce cream!\u201d shouts Simcha, launching herself off the stoop and running toward the car.<\/p>\n
