{"id":27,"date":"2013-06-18T09:17:56","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T14:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/simchafisher\/?p=27"},"modified":"2015-11-17T22:26:41","modified_gmt":"2015-11-18T03:26:41","slug":"miss-utah-says-bep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/simchafisher\/2013\/06\/18\/miss-utah-says-bep\/","title":{"rendered":"Miss Utah says &#8220;Bep&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>When I ask my kids an impossible question in a high-pressure situation \u2014 say, something like, \u201cYou thought it was okay to use a toilet plunger, a real, used toilet plunger, that is used for REAL POOP, for your Dalek costume?\u00a0 What were you thinking?\u00a0 Huh?\u00a0 <em>What made you think that was okay?\u201d \u2014 <\/em>they don\u2019t know what to say.\u00a0 They\u2019re the ones who put themselves in that situation, and yet they know and I know that there is no acceptable answer to the question.\u00a0 But I\u2019m all caught up in the passion of the moment, and I actually stand there, glaring at them, waiting for an answer.\u00a0 More than once, the answer I\u2019ve gotten is \u201d . . . bep . . . \u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what \u201cbep\u201d means.\u00a0 It\u2019s some kind of croaking that comes straight from the soul of a person who\u2019s face to face with the impossible, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBep\u201d is more or less what Miss Utah said in a widely circulated, widely mocked\u00a0video from the Miss USA Pageant.\u00a0 Someone named Nene Leakes asked her, \u201cA recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners, yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s\u00a0Miss Utah\u2019s\u00a0response:<br>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tx7TE7fCkrk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><br>\nDopey, right?\u00a0 Of course it is.\u00a0\u00a0But my response was pretty much the same as what NPR blogger Linda Holmes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/monkeysee\/2013\/06\/17\/192693012\/in-slight-defense-of-miss-utah-usa-a-little-bit-with-reservations\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">says here<\/a>:\u00a0 that there\u2019s no possible way anyone could give an intelligent or meaningful answer to that question, especially in that setting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not to put too fine a point on it, what kind of a simultaneously (1) dumb and (2) impossible to answer question is that? First of all, it\u2019s three questions rolled into one \u2014 what does it say that in 40 percent of homes, women are the primary earners, or what does it say that women earn less than men, or what does it say that we allow these two facts to coexist?<\/p>\n<p>Second of all, \u201cWhat does this say about society?\u201d Really? Not \u201cWhat kinds of help do families need to make ends meet?\u201d or something with at least some policy meat on the bones, but \u201cWhat does this say about society?\u201d Asked by NeNe Leakes? While you\u2019re standing next to Giuliana Rancic, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/celebritology\/post\/e-revolutionizes-emmy-awards-red-carpet-coverage-with-mani-cam\/2012\/09\/23\/e5bef6f0-05da-11e2-afff-d6c7f20a83bf_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">other job<\/a> involves making people walk their fingernails down a tiny, hand-sized red carpet? What would have been a <em>good<\/em> answer to this question that could have been delivered in the time frame she had?<\/p>\n<p>I think about this kind of stuff a lot. I\u2019ve studied it. I\u2019ve had about 20 years longer than Miss Utah USA to think about it. I have no idea what I would have said if someone had asked me such a moronic question on live television.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the kind of question that actually tests what you know; it\u2019s basically a test of your ability to generate cow patties on command.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What do they want from this poor woman?\u00a0 They starve her and paint her and wrap her up like a\u00a0rhinestone mummy, dangle a cash prize in front of her, and then ask her about women\u2019s place in society.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t suppose she stumbled because she was suddenly struck by a paralyzing bolt of irony.\u00a0 I suppose she just got mixed\u00a0up, and didn\u2019t know what to say.\u00a0 But still.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have any particular opinion about beauty pageants.\u00a0 They used to seem exploitative and demeaning, but boy, you have to work pretty hard to stand out in that field these days.\u00a0 It almost feels wholesome and reassuring that all these women have to do is trot around in bathing suits and have very white teeth, and nobody expects them to live tweet an orgasm or something.<\/p>\n<p>What does <em>that<\/em> say about society?\u00a0 Ohhhh, I
