Always.\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RtWBlDC2-ss?start=16&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>that many of you are checking out <a href=\"http:\/\/mouseshouses.blogspot.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">MousesHouses<\/a>, the source of the picture of that nice little mouse doing the fan dance from <a title=\"Simcha\u2019s Guide to\u00a0Weatherization\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/simchafisher\/2011\/01\/11\/simchas-guide-to-weatherization\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the other day<\/a>.\u00a0 Now, normally a blog subtitled \u201cPictures from my own private mouseland\u201d would send me screaming in the other direction, but for some reason, I really like these mice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/readingmouse.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2746\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/readingmouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am not a fan of cuteness in general, unless I gave birth to it myself<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/p1010154.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2744\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/p1010154.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"285\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and animal-looking animals doing human things usually makes my skin crawl \u2014 at least, if the animals still look fully animal-like.\u00a0 In Beatrix Potter\u2019s work, for instance:\u00a0 never liked those pictures (and the stories terrified me when I was little \u2014 all I remember is a lot of whippings, peckings, and terrified animal children hiding in baskets and watering cans. Was there more to those stories?).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2736\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/peter-rabbit-2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2736\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/peter-rabbit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"402\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sometimes that rabbit he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a rabbit... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6 style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/14838\/14838-h\/14838-h.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>I am fine with anthropomorphism, but I think the artist owes it to the viewer to put a little spark of humanity into the eye of the animal, if it\u2019s going to be doing human things; and I also appreciate it when the illustrator doesn\u2019t just make it look like the characters are people wearing animal suits, as in the deeply unpleasant <em>Arthur<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/arthur.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2752\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/arthur.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"303\"><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mary Raynor is one illustrator who\u00a0 does a great job of making the animals remain animal-like in their postures, even while playing with toy trains, going to the opera, or buying ketchup in bulk:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/mrs-pig.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2737\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/mrs-pig.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"464\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See how she\u2019s teetering on her trotters, just like a mother pig would as she reached for a heavy bottle of ketchup.\u00a0 (By the way, I heartily recommend the Pig family books by Raynor: <a href=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=ihavtositdo03-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;asins=0689707711&amp;fc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;lt1=_blank&amp;m=amazon&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;bc1=000000&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;f=ifr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mrs. Pig\u2019s Bulk Buy<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=ihavtositdo03-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;asins=0689704631&amp;fc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;lt1=_blank&amp;m=amazon&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;bc1=000000&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;f=ifr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mrs Pig Gets Cross<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty much about my family, except that they\u2019re British, and are pigs.<\/p>\n<p>There was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/picturegalleries\/howaboutthat\/8059876\/Walter-Potters-Museum-of-Curiosities-bizarre-Victorian-collection-of-stuffed-animals-goes-on-show-again.html?image=4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a story a while back<\/a> about a recently-rediscovered collection of fanciful Victorian taxidermy.\u00a0 These, at least, are well done, if somewhat, you know, full of dead kitties:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/cats-wedding_1737761i.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2748\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/358\/2011\/01\/cats-wedding_1737761i.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"305\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure what drives a person to pour so much time, energy, and formaldehyde into a project like that, other than the fact that he has some time to kill while his wife is at her mother\u2019s house, thinking things over.<\/p>\n<p>In general, I think posing animals, whether dead or alive, and taking their picture is something that ought to be booed and hissed.\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 Does it ever turn out well?\u00a0 The only exception I can think of is when people put a shirt and tie on labradors.\u00a0 For some reason, that always gets me; and it sure looks like the dog is just glad to be getting some attention.\u00a0 Harder than you\u2019d think to find a picture online, though.<\/p>\n<p>Well, now I just have to
