Then let\u2019s retreat from crass materialism.\u00a0 I hope everybody knows Tasha Tudor, whose gentle illustrations are always full of sweet grace and warmth.\u00a0 They are what Thomas Kinkade and Precious Moments fail so wretchedly to capture:\u00a0 simplicity, innocence, and the small joys of the family.\u00a0 My favorite Tasha Tudor book is<\/p>\n

A Time to Keep:\u00a0 A\u00a0 The Tasha Tudor Book of Holidays<\/em> <\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Endlessly fascinating, this book takes you through a year of traditions and celebrations from the old days.\u00a0 It makes you feel happy and nostalgic for things you aren\u2019t actually old enough to remember.\u00a0 I still feel, deep in the heart of me, that someday I will send a multi-layered birthday cake floating down the river for an evening party, or we will make our own tin can firecrackers to scare the corgis.\u00a0 Some books that hearken to a simpler time make you feel melancholy and guilty when you\u2019re done, as you compare your life to what you\u2019ve read; but this book doesn\u2019t have that effect.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even sure why.\u00a0 Maybe because, like Norman Rockwell, she injects enough realism \u2014 skinned knees, chapped lips, burnt fingers \u2014 to remind you that life was never perfect; and that children are still children, and always will be.<\/p>\n
