\nThey have just got rid of the 16<\/span>th or 17<\/span>th when Cedric
\nfinds out that there are no more nannies to be had. As he converses with his
\ndeceased wife\u2019s empty pink chair, he hears a voice: you need Nanny McPhee (Emma
\nThompson). She appears and moves in just in time to catch the kids tearing the
\nkitchen apart \u2013 a place they are forbidden to go. The cook, Mrs. Blatherwick
\n(Imelda Staunton), has Mr. Brown\u2019s promise they will not enter the kitchen. But
\nBrown is powerless to do almost anything. The illiterate scullery maid,
\nEvangeline (Kelly Macdonald), feels sorry for him.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nchildren think she\u2019s a witch. But when she raps her stick on the floor, the
\nkids clean up the kitchen in record time and she marches them to bed.

Nanny tells them she has five lessons to teach them and when
\nthey don\u2019t want her but need her she will be there; when they want her but
\ndon\u2019t need her, she will be gone. Every time the children learn a lesson,
\nsomething inexplicably magical happens, but I can\u2019t tell you what \u2013 you have to
\nsee the film for yourself.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
\nscreenplay, based on the Nurse Matilda books by Christianna Brand (I am not
\nfamiliar with these.)\u00a0 At first I thought
\nthis was going to be a Mary Poppins story, then I thought of the <\/span>Sound of Music<\/i>, then <\/span>Cheaper by the Dozen<\/i> and <\/span>Yours, <\/i>and <\/span>Mine and Ours<\/i>. I am not sure why these \u201cfamily movies\u201d must have
\nfood fights in them, but the kids in the audience seem to relish them. Of
\ncourse, there are some Cinderella\/fairy godmother elements as well.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nPatrick Barlow didn\u2019t quite work for me, and sometimes I got the impression the
\nstory was rather pasted together, albeit with polyester colors and much whimsy.
\nIt was good to see Angela Lansbury in a film again. Imelda Staunton as the cook
\nis very good.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nreminded me of the story books my mother had from her childhood, those morality tales that educators dislike so much \u2013 at first. If
\nyou get up on the wrong side of the bed, bad things will happen to you because
\nyou are so grumpy. But Nanny teaches the children about consequences with care
\nand sensitivity and everything turns out all right \u2013 but you knew that, didn\u2019t
\nyou?<\/span><\/p>\n
\ngarage with two young boys ( 8 or 9 years old) and their parents. The kids were
\nchatting and trying to remember all the five lessons. The mom looked at me as
\nif to say, \u201cGo figure; they liked it!\u201d

Sounds like a good endorsement to me, Nanny McPhee~<\/span><\/font>
And about that magical thing that happens when the kids learn a lesson \u2013 try to figure out the connection between the lesson and the magic\u2026
