{"id":1741,"date":"2006-12-29T12:59:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-29T02:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sisterrose.wordpress.com\/2006\/12\/29\/best-and-worst-films-of-2006\/"},"modified":"2006-12-29T12:59:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-29T02:59:00","slug":"best-and-worst-films-of-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/sisterrosemovies\/2006\/12\/best-and-worst-films-of-2006\/","title":{"rendered":"Best and Worst Films of 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\" color=\"#004000\"><strong>Best and Worst Films of 2006 (of the 98 I saw\u2026)<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">As usual, a flurry of promising films\u00a0is being released before the end of the year so they can be considered for the Golden Globes Awards (January 15, 2007, NBC) and the Academy Awards (February 25, 2007): <i>Miss Potter, The Good German, Dreamgirls, Children of Men, Perfume, Notes on a Scandal, the Painted Veil<\/i>, <i>Letters from Iwo Jima, <\/i>etc. <i>Volver<\/i>, with Penelope Cruz, is getting a lot of buzz, but it\u2019s not in wide release. Alas, I have not had the opportunity to see these films yet so I cannot include them on by best and worst film list of 2006. (I will add to this list as I see the films).<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">My basic criteria for judging films (as stated in my column in St. Anthony Messenger, 2006) are:<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">\u2022 The degree to which the filmmaker tells the story through the creative use of image and sound; <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">\u2022 How well the main character grows as a person and member of the human family; <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">\u2022 The promotion of the gospel values of human dignity, family and community, justice, peace and fair representation of cultures, races, genders, ages, religious faiths and spiritualities; <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">\u2022 The ability to entertain<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">Over 750 films were released commercially in 2006; I saw 98. (According to <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/movies\/index2006.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><font face=\"Verdana\" color=\"#800080\">http:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/movies\/index2006.php<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\">, 770 films will have been released by December 31.)<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><font color=\"#ff0080\">My Best Films List for 2007<\/font><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">(All of these deserve award consideration)<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>Babel<\/b><b> (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress Rinko Kikuchi)<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Blood Diamond (Best Screenplay; Best Actor Leonardo di Caprio; Djimon Hounsou for Best Supporting Actor)<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Catch a Fire (Best Actor Derek Luke)<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">The Departed (Best Director!! All films about women and all excel<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">The Queen (Helen Mirren for Best Actress and Stephen Frears for Direction)<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Stranger than Fiction (Best Screenplay and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actress)<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Water (Best Foreign Film)<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><font color=\"#008000\">Honorable Mention<\/font><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><font color=\"#008000\"><\/font><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\">Yes, there are a lot of films on this list\u2026 and I am glad I got to see each one; the ones tagged with an ** deserve award consideration, whether Golden Globe, People\u2019s Choice, a Gabriel, or an Oscar). I reviewed most of these films in St. Anthony Messenger (<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americancatholic.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><font face=\"Verdana\">www.AmericanCatholic.org<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Verdana\">) this year, but was not able to keep up with my blog for a few months\u2026.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Akeelah and the Bee **<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">The Ant Bully**<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">The Beauty Academy of Kabul<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Cars **<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Catch a Fire **<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Cautiva<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\">Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b><\/b><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>Conversations with God \u2013 <\/b>I want to comment on this film because of it goes to the heart of spirituality: one\u2019s image of God. It\u2019s non-denominational and tells the story of a man who made a journey from despair, hopelessness, and homelessness to a new life by struggling with his negative image of God. As he came to know God better and gained faith, he began to pray and to see life and eternity in a new light. style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" Architect \u2013 <\/b>A film with so much potential and then \u2026 it just fizzled.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>Barnyard \u2013 <\/b>for its faulty zoology, lack of humor and \u2026 laziness (e.g. the same old story about an orphan male yada yada yada that needs a witch to create \u2026what?\u00a0 and so the we get the compulsory negative portrayal of the human female character, the farmer\u2019s wife).<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><strong><span>Borat: CulturalLearnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight:normal\"> \u2013 Mostly the yuck factor and so much more<\/span><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>The Celestine Prophecy \u2013 <\/b>A weird Catholic-flavored New Age thingy<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>The Da Vinci Code \u2013 <\/b>Even considering its terrible theology, it was a film without a hero and the false New Age-y ending \u2013 not in the book but consistent, I guess, with the gnostic ethos of the film \u2013 was so \u2026 odd. <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>Freedomland \u2013 <\/b>For passionate performances in a story without a plot<b><\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><b><font face=\"Verdana\"><\/font><\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0\"><font face=\"Verdana\"><b>One Night with a King \u2013 <\/b>For its troubling ideological subtext<span>\u00a0 <\/span>(e.g. juxtaposition of the swastika and Star of David and speeches about democracy during the reign of King Xerxes \u2013 485-465 BC \u2013 of Persia, i.e. current Iran)<\/font><\/p>\n<p
