The president and mother superior (<a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Ellen Burstyn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/ellen_burstyn\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ellen Burstyn<\/a>,\u00a0<em>W.<\/em>) of the small Catholic all-girls <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Immaculata University\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.02899,-75.57169&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=40.02899,-75.57169%20(Immaculata%20University)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Immaculata College<\/a>, northwest of Philadelphia, hires a new basketball coach, <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Cathy Rush\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cathy_Rush\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cathy Rush<\/a> (<a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Carla Gugino\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/carla_gugino\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Carla Gugino<\/a>,\u00a0<em><a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Race to Witch Mountain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/race_to_witch_mountain\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Race to Witch Mountain<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Rush, who is non-Catholic and newly married to Ed (David Boreanaz,\u00a0<em>Bones<\/em>), discovers that the team has no uniforms or a gym to practice in and that the school itself may soon be sold. But she takes on these challenges with sheer determination. Ed thinks that she is just trying to find a way to spend her time, but becomes confused by her dedication and their marriage suffers.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Sunday (<a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Marley Shelton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/marley_shelton\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Marley Shelton<\/a>,\u00a0<em>W.<\/em>) is questioning her vocation and wants to request a leave of absence from the community. But Rush notices her interest in basketball and invites her to be the assistant coach. They become friends, and the young nun grows in her understanding of her own calling.<\/p>\n<p>With the energy and talent of the team, coaches and nuns, the Mighty Macs power their way to the first AIAW (<a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Association_for_Intercollegiate_Athletics_for_Women\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women<\/a>) national championship in 1972. They would subsequently win in 1973 and 1974, as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Mighty Macs<\/em>\u00a0is based on a true story, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters were consulted on the film. The story was developed for the screen by first-time writer\/director Tim Chambers and producer Pat Croce.<\/p>\n<p>Themes of hard work, faith, character and heart permeate the film. Coach Cathy tells the girls before a game: \u201c\u2019Do you know that in a race all the runners compete? But only one receives the prize. So run, that you may obtain it\u2019\u2014Corinthians. You\u2019ve earned the right to run the race tonight and it\u2019s O.K. to want the prize. Do you know why teams get to championships?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A player answers, \u201cTrust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rush continues, \u201cThat\u2019s why they get to the championships. But do you know why they\u00a0<em>win<\/em>\u00a0championships? I want all of you to point to yourselves. That\u2019s right. Look where you are all pointing [to their hearts]. This is why championships are won. One team, one beat, one heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the film gives off a low-budget vibe, the feel is authentic and consistent with the story. The acting is frank, open and moving.
