If we\u2019re going to start treating Louis L\u2019Amour novels as actual history, then we need to start with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Walking_Drum\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Walking Drum<\/em><\/a> \u2014 his epic historical novel set in 12th-century Europe. (L\u2019Amour\u2019s protagonist, Kerbouchard, is a bit of a Mary Sue fantasy, but the author did his homework and jams the book full of fascinating detail.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Benedict XVI: <a href=\"http:\/\/bilgrimage.blogspot.com\/2013\/02\/droppings-from-catholic-birdcage_15.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Al Mohler of the Catholic Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0I am 6\u20192\u2033. That\u2019s partially correct. It <em>is<\/em> a lamprey. But a lamprey <em>is<\/em> a sea monster.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0The Onion: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/articles\/gay-teen-worried-he-might-be-christian,2888\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gay Teen Worried He Might Be Christian<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At first glance, high school senior Lucas Faber, 18, seems like any ordinary gay teen. He\u2019s a member of his school\u2019s swing choir, enjoys shopping at the mall, and has sex with other males his age. But lately, a growing worry has begun to plague this young gay man. I\u2019m a curious layperson, not an academic, so they\u2019re both a bit over my head at times, but I enjoy both of these fascinating monthly roundups. If you like stories about unearthing very old things that help us learn about the past, you\u2019ll like both of these too.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0\u2022\u00a0It\u2019s hard to say anything new about how despicable and predatory \u201cprosperity gospel\u201d preachers tend to be, and perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/dispatches\/sarahposner\/6881\/prosperity_gospel_and_foreclosure\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sarah Posner<\/a> doesn\u2019t say anything remarkably original here:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>How many people believed Steve Munsey, and believed that giving him money \u2014 for his family\u2019s salaries, the car, the jet, the other excesses \u2014 would \u201cbless\u201d them? How many dollars did he collect by telling people that God would bless them for giving him money, that their own poverty was caused by a lack of faith and a lack of giving to him, and that God would not be merciful to them unless they demonstrated their faithfulness by giving their money to him?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But whether or not those questions are new, they\u2019re certainly good ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201cFirst of all, <a href=\"http:\/\/maddowblog.msnbc.com\/_news\/2013\/02\/22\/17058451-grassleys-accidental-pro-choice-principles\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">nothing can be done to your body without your permission<\/a>. So, it\u2019d be a violation of the constitutional right to privacy if that were to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, reassuring a constituent that preschoolers aren\u2019t going to be injected with a Mark-of-the-Beast microchip, while also accidentally reaffirming that <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> is constitutional, necessary and just.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2013\/02\/announces-drones-project.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">YNATKC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leftover links from the week that was, including: the squeaky frog that freaks out dogs;
