A while ago someone told me that slavery was \u201conly part\u201d of why the Civil War was fought. Now I\u2019m trying to imagine the job interview where you explain that kidnapping, rape and torture are \u201conly part\u201d of your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. When slavery is <em>any<\/em> part of the agenda, it really doesn\u2019t much matter if it\u2019s the <em>only<\/em> part, does it?<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2013\/06\/7ball2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15915\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2013\/06\/7ball2-300x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\"><\/a>2.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/mrhackman.blogspot.com\/2013\/05\/father-god-101.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Andrew Hackman<\/a> on collapsing the transcendent into the immanent. So was the author of 1 John, <em>ad nauseum.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/06\/11\/plan-b-is-otc-lets-get-started-on-those-sex-cults\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Emergency contraception is finally available over the counter<\/a>. So is soy sauce. The big difference here is that <a href=\"http:\/\/consumerist.com\/2013\/06\/10\/deliberately-chugging-an-excessive-amount-of-soy-sauce-can-put-you-in-a-literal-food-coma\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">soy sauce carries actual health risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> I am shocked \u2014 <em>shocked!<\/em> \u2014 that <a href=\"http:\/\/pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com\/2013\/05\/26\/family-policy-institute-of-washington-misrepresents-facts-in-a-child-rape-case\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">good Christian people would lie about Planned Parenthood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xlCJ82W7iSQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">This is how you request a song<\/a> at a concert. And here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V09bA9H6TF0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a music video from long before anyone talked about music videos<\/a>. If (far less than) One Million Moms had been around when this came out, they\u2019d have called for a boycott of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scopitonearchive.com\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scopitone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maddowblog.msnbc.com\/_news\/2013\/06\/19\/19040554-alaskas-murkowski-backs-marriage-equality\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska just became the third Republican senator to go on record in support of marriage equality<\/a>. That\u2019s big news. Or, I suppose actually, it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> big news \u2014 but the fact that this news wasn\u2019t greeted as big news, but with a kind of collective nod and shrug is itself a kind of big news. Her statement, titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?p=OpEds&amp;ContentRecord_id=8295b7c7-e504-4b32-bc25-354b3aef41dc\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Pursuit of Happiness \u2014 Without Government Interference<\/a>,\u201d might convince other Red-state Republicans that they can join her without the sky falling on their heads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong>\u00a0I have long held that the New Hampshire House of Representatives is too damn big. Tiny New Hampshire has 400 representatives elected from 204 legislative districts, and it turns out you can\u2019t fill that many seats without letting in a bunch of unqualified, embarrassing whackjobs and goofballs. But even by the standards of the Granite State, it seems <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmur.com\/political-scoop\/controversial-gop-nh-rep-tremblay-resigns\/-\/16254890\/20646208\/-\/10tawsgz\/-\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rep. Stella Tremblay, R-Auburn, is too far out there<\/a>. After continually pushing her theory that the Boston Marathon bombing was a government-sponsored false-flag operation, Tremblay was rebuked by a vote of the full House and resigned from the legislature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just connect the dots,\u201d said the unrepentantly dotty Tremblay. \u201cApparently, it is very dangerous to seek truth, or ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to N.H. Republican Chair Jennifer Horn for responding unambiguously: \u201cRepresentative Tremblay was unfit for public office and not welcome in our party. We are glad to see her go.\u201d I know that\u2019s partly just damage-control, but if the national party were willing to be that direct with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/06\/20\/gohmert-cutting-food-stamps-not-evil-because-poor-people-buy-king-crab-legs\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gohmerts<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/politics\/2013\/06\/michael-burgess-fetus-masturbation\/66345\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Burgesses<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/politics\/2013\/06\/17\/2169751\/jeff-duncan-birther\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Duncans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/519643\/rep-trent-franks-only-sounds-like-a-nazi-because-hes-100-percent-unapologetically-pro-life\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Franks<\/a> (<em>Frankses?<\/em>) now dragging it down, it might be in better shape.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Naming army bases after U.S. enemies.
