Conservatives are not. Rich Yeselson recalls how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/08\/opinion-rich-yeselson-bill-de-blasios-nyc-mayoral-election-96017_Page2.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">conservatives crushed Upton Sinclair\u2019s call for a full-employment policy in California<\/a>. Giving the unemployed jobs was then, as now, viewed with contempt as just another \u201chand-out\u201d to the undeserving moochers. That\u2019s what makes Rep. Steve King\u2019s call to <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/08\/28\/2545461\/congressman-people-jobs-like-lazy-kids-need-step\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">punish the unemployed, like children who refuse to do their chores<\/a>, so vile. Don\u2019t do your chores and we\u2019ll send you to bed without supper. But it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re begging to be given chores, we have no chores for you to do \u2014 and therefore you must be punished. Steve King really is an evil little wart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/maddowblog.msnbc.com\/_news\/2013\/08\/29\/20246499-had-the-clerk-issued-marriage-licenses-to-12-year-olds\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Conservatives do not understand what \u201cconsent\u201d means or why it matters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2013\/08\/SevenChurches.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17367\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2013\/08\/SevenChurches-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\"><\/a>3.<\/strong> Matthew Hagee, like his father John Hagee, is a prominent white evangelical in Texas. But he sure ain\u2019t no Baptist: \u201cNow when individuals say, \u2018I believe there\u2019s a separation of church and state,'\u201d Hagee says, \u201cI would give them this response. I would like to see what God\u2019s opinion of your position is when you meet him in eternity.\u201d Roger Williams, apparently, is in Hell, because only theocrats can go to Heaven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Any discussion of <a href=\"http:\/\/julieclawson.com\/2013\/08\/28\/joss-whedon-and-self-referential-storytelling\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Joss Whedon, theology and Paul Ricouer<\/a> wins a link from me. But Julie Clawson misses one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/mike-ryan\/joss-whedon-avengers-age-of-ultron_b_3824193.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">key point Mike Ryan makes<\/a> in seconding Joss\u2019 comment on \u201cthat thing in <em>Temple of Doom<\/em> where they revisit the shooting trick\u201d \u2014 <em>Temple of Doom<\/em> is a <em>prequel<\/em>. We can remember the scene in the first movie, but <em>Indy<\/em> can\u2019t, because for him the scene in the first movie <em>hasn\u2019t happened yet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Religion News Service has a good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/2013\/08\/29\/the-ethics-of-a-syrian-military-intervention-the-experts-respond\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">round-up of ethicists and\/or experts on the idea of military intervention in Syria\u2019s civil war<\/a>. Here\u2019s Stanley Hauerwas, because these days if you want to understand the just-war tradition, you have to ask a pacifist:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The language of intervention and no-intervention is meaningless. America has hundreds of military bases around the world. We\u2019ve intervened. The question is what are the limits of American intervention?
