That\u2019s a straw poll of Christian conservatives \u2014 the mostly white adherents of white evangelicalism. CBN\u2019s David Brody is part of that crowd, and Brody says that for that crowd, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cbn.com\/thebrodyfile\/archive\/2013\/10\/12\/the-rock-star-has-landed-ted-cruz-wins-values-voter.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cruz is a \u201crock star<\/a>.\u201d Brody, you may recall, popularized the term \u201cteavangelical\u201d \u2014 as a badge of honor, not a pejorative. The tea party and the religious right are not identical, but if you make a Venn diagram showing one in blue and the other in yellow, you\u2019ll be looking at a big green dot with a tiny corona on either side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Russell Moore has succeeded Richard Land as the Southern Baptist\u2019s chief public spokesperson. Admirers of his more media-savvy approach point to things like this \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drmoore\/status\/389534870953025536\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Moore tweeting from the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony<\/a> that \u201cTaylor Swift just won the songwriter\/artist of the year award.\u201d Happily, Moore did not jump up on the stage, saying, \u201cYo Taylor. I\u2019m really happy for you, Ima let you finish, but Chris Tomlin had one of the best songs of all time \u2026\u201d (The real difference between Moore and Land, media-savvy-wise? Moore would probably get that joke.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>4.<\/strong> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/10\/10\/2765981\/maine-liheap-shutdown\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shutdown Leaves Maine\u2019s Poor Without Heating Assistance as Winter Approaches<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s infuriating to me that LIHEAP isn\u2019t massively well-funded. Democrats ought to love it because helping poor people is what makes our liberal bleeding-hearts go pitter-pat. And Republicans ought to love it because it\u2019s <em>money for energy companies<\/em>. Poor people who can\u2019t afford heat don\u2019t end up writing checks for heating oil \u2014 checks that therefore cannot be cashed by oil and coal companies. Every dollar invested in LIHEAP is, ultimately, a dollar that goes to some big energy company. Yes, unfortunately, along the way those dollars pass through the hands of poor families, allowing them some small measure of comfort, health and security through the winter, and I know that rankles conservatives. But isn\u2019t that a small price to pay for what is, ultimately, just exactly the kind of corporate subsidy their donors expect them to support?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Getting rid of Syria\u2019s chemical weapons is a Good Thing. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/10\/14\/doctors-without-borders-treat-syria-aid-as-urgently-as-chemical-weapons\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Doctors Without Borders<\/a> would also like to remind us that there\u2019s a huge humanitarian crisis resulting from that country\u2019s ongoing civil war. (This is hard to talk about, since we seem to have weirdly equated \u201cstopping\u201d a war with <em>joining<\/em> that war. The former would be a Good Thing. The latter would not.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>6.<\/strong> At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wideopenground.com\/why-qf-and-patriarchal-families-really-shelter-their-kids\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wide Open Ground<\/a>, Lana Hope, who was raised in the Gothardite cult, offers an insightful bit of speculation about that movement\u2019s rules for \u201cmodesty\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I used to think [Gothardite] leaders wanted us to wear modest clothing, so we won\u2019t be a stumbling block to men. I think that\u2019s a cover up. I think they wanted us to look odd, so men wouldn\u2019t find us. So we wouldn\u2019t be asked on date, so we would marry a like-minded person, and so we would never discover the real world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>7.<\/strong> Opponents of women having health insurance that covers contraception costs are <a href=\"http:\/\/rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2013\/10\/14\/u-s-default-low-price-to-pay-for-banning-birth-control-according-to-catholic-bishops-and-paul-ryan\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">still threatening to resort to civil disobedience<\/a> if women are not denied health insurance that covers contraception costs.
