1.<\/strong> Well, the good news is that at the last possible moment, Congress finally voted not to default on paying the bills it had legally mandated, and also to end the government shutdown after 16 pointless<\/a> and expensively harmful<\/a> days. The bad news is this is more temporary, short-term, stop-gap solutions, so we\u2019ll be doing all of this again in a few months.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>2.<\/strong> Congratulations to Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> An Australian human rights group just published its Global Slavery Index 2013<\/a>, estimating that about 30 million people live in some form of slavery worldwide. That figure includes \u201cdebt bondage, forced marriage and human trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Dianna E. Anderson: \u201cA Short Guide to Who Is to Blame in Cases of Sexual Assault<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> So, wait, I\u2019ll<\/em> never get to meet Stephen Fry, but a shameless, dishonest little toad like Joseph Nicolosi does<\/a> simply because<\/em> he\u2019s a shameless, dishonest little toad? That doesn\u2019t seem fair. (And I\u2019m still upset that Fox TV had Fry guest starring on Bones<\/em> without ever having him on House, MD.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> The Amish Jihadist on \u201cWhy First Things<\/em> Still Sucks<\/a>\u201c: \u201cAt least criticize what we actually argue rather than some inane straw man we torched centuries ago. \u2026 That was a shitty article to write and you should know better.\u201d Tripp\u2019s complaint is obviously unfair. Asking First Things<\/em> to stop criticizing inane straw men amounts to telling them to stop publishing at all, and if that happened, where could preening pseudo-intellectuals trying to spiritualize their right-wing ideology\u00a0go<\/em> to reinforce their epistemic closure?<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> Edward Kleinbard: \u201cThe huge health-care subsidy everyone is ignoring<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

The most consequential subsidy is rarely mentioned or even noticed: Government for decades has directly subsidized individuals\u2019 costs of employer-based health care, to the tune of roughly $250 billion every year \u2013 sums far greater than the annual costs of the subsidized insurance coverage provisions of the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n

That fact makes the ongoing debate positively perverse. What we are witnessing today are individuals who already receive government health-care handouts attempting to prevent others from obtaining similar (but smaller in aggregate amount) health-care subsidies, as well. And as a group, today\u2019s recipients of government health-care subsidies are better off to begin with than are those they wish to exclude.<\/p>\n

\u2026\u00a0So today, 140 million Americans (including members of Congress) directly receive government subsidies when they get health-care coverage through their employers. The Affordable Care Act extends government health-care subsidies to millions of other Americans, but for administrative reasons delivers the subsidy through a different mechanism. But so what? Why is the first subsidy somehow lost in a fog of flag waving and free enterprise talk, and the second the sure sign of galloping socialism?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
