A wild success, indeed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/01\/06\/marco-rubio-is-wrong-the-war-on-poverty-worked.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">by nearly every meaningful measure<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Rep. Paul] Ryan is fine with our laws reflecting little concern for human dignity, safety, or justice as owed to the poor, but <a href=\"http:\/\/elizabethstoker.com\/2014\/01\/06\/on-minimum-wage-laws-courts-christian-ethics\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">somehow expects people to differ enough from the moral structure of their laws<\/a> to fill in the extraordinary gaps without any assistance from the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScripture\u2019s view of poverty is not like this at all.\u00a0It exposes basic truths about negative habits that can produce poverty, but it <a href=\"http:\/\/jessecurtis.blogspot.com\/2014\/01\/how-failure-to-understand-poverty-shows.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">never assumes, as we are so prone to, that a given instance of poverty was caused by such habits<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2014\/01\/Jobs.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-20304\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2014\/01\/Jobs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"333\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cWhen her bankruptcy proceedings concluded in 2010, ECMC began to hound her, and garnished her Social Security income,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/consumerist.com\/2014\/01\/03\/one-company-is-working-hard-to-make-sure-your-student-loans-stay-with-you-until-you-die\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">all in the name of repaying loans that had already been paid in full<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a pretty good chance that you, your friends, and your family are going to live three or four years less than you should, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2014\/01\/chart-day-americas-health-care-system-killing-you\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">solely because you live in America<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a perverse truth of the U.S. health-care debate that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2014\/01\/06\/medicaid-is-obamacares-biggest-success-but-neither-side-wants-to-talk-about-it\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">solutions that have worked both here and around the world are the only solutions the political system refuses to consider<\/a> seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruit is my favorite. Peaches. Nectarines. Cantaloupe. Bananas. I like Fuji apples. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com\/2013\/12\/the-lives-of-fast-food-workers\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Can\u2019t afford to eat it<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour could <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2014\/01\/03\/3115831\/minimum-wage-poverty\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lift about 4.6 million people out of poverty directly<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Cambodian workers desperate to make a decent living, like the Bangladeshi workers and like the Indonesian workers and Chinese workers and Vietnamese workers, face a government that has no interest in representing them and with a lack of meaningful democratic processes to create that change in ways that American liberals deem acceptable, i.e., the ballot box. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com\/2014\/01\/garment-workers-and-their-states\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">So given that, what are they supposed to do?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCitizens who treat politics as consumption, however, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ianwelsh.net\/the-power-parable\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">will lose both power and prosperity<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can figure out a way to stay within this carbon budget before it\u2019s too late, we can still avert a climate disaster. If we can\u2019t, then we too might look back at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.smithsonianmag.com\/science\/2013\/12\/six-things-we-learned-about-our-changing-climate-in-2013\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">today\u2019s record-breaking temperatures, droughts and floods as a fond memory of milder times<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Listen!
