I picked up a couple of extra nights at the Big Box this week, but I\u2019m hoping to get that posted on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Friday morning the ground around here was covered with what looked like Dippin\u2019 Dots or little styrofoam beads \u2014 like someone had ripped open a giant beanbag chair and dumped it over Chester County. There\u2019s a name for that, of course \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graupel\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">graupel<\/a>, or \u201csoft hail.\u201d Weird and kinda cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dianna E. Anderson offers an encouraging and <a href=\"http:\/\/diannaeanderson.net\/blog\/2015\/1\/gcnconf-and-the-power-of-being-seen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">promising report from the Gay Christian Network conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/01\/DiannaDG.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26348\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/01\/DiannaDG-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"DiannaDG\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><\/a>\u2022 And, speaking of, I ust got this in the mail: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Damaged-Goods-Perspectives-Christian-Purity\/dp\/1455577391\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Damaged Goods: New Perspectives on Christian Purity<\/a>,<\/em> by Dianna E. Anderson. Looking forward to reading this.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/amethystmarie.com\/2015\/01\/11\/agent-carter-can-i-be-her-already\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amethyst Marie is enjoying <em>Agent Carter<\/em><\/a>. Me too.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/politics\/2015\/01\/selma_and_lbj_why_critics_are_wrong_about_how_the_film_portrays_president.single.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jamelle Bouie<\/a> has some smart observations on the purpose and function of a movie like <em>Selma<\/em> versus the purpose and function of a documentary about the same events: \u201cIt\u2019s wrong to treat nonfiction films \u2014 even biopics \u2014 as documentaries. Instead, it\u2019s better to look at deviations from established history or known facts as creative choices \u2014 license in pursuit of art. As viewers, we should be less concerned with fact-checking and more interested in understanding the choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sound\u00a0you hear following that is hundreds of\u00a0biblical studies professors bursting into applause.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201cErotic Liberty\u201d is, alas, not what it sounds like \u2014 it\u2019s not a new reality\u00a0series from Cinemax exposing the sordid post-curfew nightlife of Jerry Falwell\u2019s flagship fundamentalist university in Virginia. It is, instead, the latest attempt by Southern Baptist Archbishop Al Mohler to create a new anti-gay buzzword. Mohler offers this new buzzword as a trial balloon in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2015\/01\/12\/religious-liberty-vs-erotic-liberty-religious-liberty-is-losing\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">semi-coherent, dishonest column<\/a> in which he pretends that Atlanta\u2019s ex-fire chief was fired for quoting the Bible rather than for religious harassment \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2015\/01\/09\/was-it-right-for-atlantas-mayor-to-fire-the-citys-fire-chief-over-his-anti-gay-book\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">proselytizing on the job and using the power of his office to coerce subordinates into agreeing with his religious views<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If ex-chief Cochran were a devout Muslim who had been distributing his Islamic book to his subordinates, or a Pagan who had been distributing his Pagan tract, or an atheist, or a Scientologist, or a \u201cNew Ager,\u201d or anything other than a conservative evangelical culture warrior, then Mohler would be shouting the exact opposite of what he\u2019s shouting in that column.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 And speaking of hypocritically disingenuous, anti-gay princes of the church who love to listen to the sound of their own voices \u2026 \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">It\u2019s an obstinate majesty you have, dear Cardinal,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/killingthebuddha.com\/ktblog\/cardinal-burke-and-the-emangelicals\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mary Valle writes<\/a> in her capacity as president of the Cardinal Burke Superfan Club.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let me apologize for missing today&#8217;s Left Behind post, and for the following, wherein I use the words &#8220;erotic&#8221; and &#8220;Al Mohler&#8221; in the same sentence.
