height=\"521\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #202020\">In other words, <a href=\"http:\/\/rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2015\/04\/24\/error-becomes-lie-missing-decimal-point\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he inflated complication rates by a factor of ten\u00a0and then continued repeating erroneous data<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Pro-life\u2019 has, in this schema, totally taken leave of the plethora of other life issues with which it\u00a0<i>has<\/i>\u00a0to cohere, <a href=\"http:\/\/bilgrimage.blogspot.com\/2015\/05\/droppings-from-catholic-birdcage.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">if it\u2019s to be any kind of meaningful ethical approach to anything at all<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #242424\">White men politely asked for identification, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2015\/05\/18\/1385630\/-Two-open-carry-activists-One-white-one-black-Two-very-different-police-responses\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">black men held at gun point and six police cars arrive<\/a> on the scene within a minute or two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">I\u2019d come and take that voter card right out of their hand and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/larry-pratt-id-take-new-citizens-voter-card-and-rip-it-right-front-their-face\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">rip it up in front of their face<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #444444\">One can imagine <a href=\"http:\/\/brianmclaren.net\/archives\/blog\/evangelicals-and-lgbtq-equality.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">exactly the same strategy being deployed in, say, 1858 regarding slavery<\/a> or in 1958 regarding segregation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #111111\">There were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-watch\/wp\/2015\/05\/06\/this-isnt-1968-baltimore-isnt-watts-and-hillary-clinton-isnt-michael-dukakis\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">500 fewer overall murders in 2013 than there were in 1969<\/a>, despite the fact that the population increased by 115 million people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wlwt.com\/money\/technology\/google-sorry-for-racist-search-that-leads-to-wh\/33126362\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be<\/a>, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #444444\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> reported that neither White House officials nor a Twitter spokesman could provide <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/obama-twitter-racism-personal-acount\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the exact number of racist tweets that made their way to the commander-in-chief<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/feministing.com\/2015\/05\/27\/australia-moves-to-scrap-tampon-tax-after-student-protest\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">T<\/a><span style=\"color: #444444\"><a href=\"http:\/\/feministing.com\/2015\/05\/27\/australia-moves-to-scrap-tampon-tax-after-student-protest\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he government is making a profit on my period<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/old-time-religion.blogspot.com\/2015\/06\/old-time-religion-modern-mother.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28379\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/06\/modernmother-123x300.jpg\" alt=\"modernmother\" width=\"200\" height=\"485\"><\/a>\u201c<span style=\"color: #444444\">Complementarity just isn\u2019t very satisfying. <a href=\"http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/transitions-caitlyn-jenner-gender-identity-and-christians-behaving-badly-again\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">It\u2019s the Taco Bell of theology<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking to 1,500 students at Wellesley College in 1921, Mrs. Augustus Trowbridge \u2014 the wife of a Princeton professor \u2014 railed against \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/npr-history-dept\/2015\/05\/26\/409126557\/when-petting-parties-scandalized-the-nation\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the vulgarity and revolting badness of petting parties<\/a>.\u2019 She said that the loose-moraled gatherings \u2014 along with jazz music, unchaperoned dancing and lipstick \u2014 were symptomatic of a decadent society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">No matter how \u00a0Wells Fargo treated poor and minority customers, <a href=\"http:\/\/brucegerencser.net\/2015\/06\/the-homophobia-of-focus-on-the-family-samaritans-purse-and-franklin-graham\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Focus on the Family, Samaritan\u2019s Purse, and Franklin Graham said nothing<\/a>. Yet, when Wells Fargo runs a one minute ad featuring a lesbian couple,\u00a0<\/span>THEN<span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Focus on the Family, Samaritan\u2019s Purse, and Franklin Graham decided to say something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2015\/05\/michigan-pastor-who-railed-against-same-sex-marriage-resigns-after-being-caught-seeking-men-on-grindr\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michigan pastor who railed against same-sex marriage resigns after being caught seeking men on Grindr<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2015\/05\/pastor-caught-having-gay-sex-in-van-spent-stolen-church-money-on-farmer-dating-website-police\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pastor caught having gay sex in van spent stolen church money on farmer dating website<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #444444\">Rubio\u2019s statement\u00a0is simply a <a href=\"http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/rubio-is-confused-about-christianity-marriage-equality-and-the-constitution\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">confused muddle\u00a0of fear-mongering and constitutional misconception<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #222222\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/ronit-y-stahl\/the-fallacy-of-state-coerced-marriage-officiants-a-primer-from-the-military-chaplaincy_b_7182922.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Religious liberty is a two-way street<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\">When I defend the right of our chaplains to be evangelical I must at the same time defend the right of those so disposed to be just as liberal as they choose to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #111111\">What\u2019s frustrating about these social conservative reactions to Jenner isn\u2019t that people care so much about traditional morality. It\u2019s that they think it\u2019s useful to dismissively <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/blogs\/archive\/2015-06\/whose-comprehensive-morality\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">rant against an experience that\u2019s so often been marginalized and attacked \u2014 and that isn\u2019t their own<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #222222\">I have another bad memory from the 1960s that I hope will not return in real life: the polarization of public opinion into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal-a\/2015_04\/bad_memories_coming_to_life055285.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hostile camps carrying the banners of \u2018justice\u2019 and \u2018law and order.<\/a>\u2018\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #444444\">Ultimately, <a href=\"http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/why-christian-fundamentalism-is-still-big-deal-in-u-s-politics-and-how-it-got-that-way\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I didn\u2019t arrive at the end of this project with an optimistic sense that we are all going to start getting along<\/a> anytime soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/XVdaRpF\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28177\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/05\/Neighborly.jpg\" alt=\"Neighborly\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. &#8230; Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":141,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-27820","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Postcards from the culture wars (6.20)<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&quot;Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. ... Eight years later he still hasn\u2019t finished reviewing the second book of that series and the experience has left him a broken shell of a man. Fred knows the difference between the possessive \u201cits\u201d and the contraction \u201cit\u2019s,\u201d and he is acutely bothered when others mistakenly confuse the two, yet he himself just kind of instinctively types the apostrophe whether or not it belongs there. Some feel this is his greatest hypocrisy, but those who know him better know better. He\u2019s guilty of much greater hypocrisies. Jesus loves Fred far more than Fred loves Jesus, but he at least has the decency to recognize the unfairness of that lopsided relationship and he has long wished that he were better at maybe kind of sort of doing something more to correct that some day.
