This one-season-wonder was the lowest-rated show in the history of the FX channel. But it was terrific.<\/p>\n<p>The character-driven, surf-noir <em>Terriers<\/em> could be seen as a\u00a0laid-back cousin to the new season of <em>True Detective.<\/em> It offers everything HBO\u2019s prestige show has, but with more schlubby charm: Seedy underbelly of Southern California as setting for <em>Chinatown<\/em>-type grand conspiracy? Check. Divorced, alcoholic, self-loathing anti-hero as protagonist? Check. A\u00a0self-deprecating sense of dark humor\u00a0and a bulldog named Winston? Check.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28505\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/06\/Terriers.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28505\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/06\/Terriers-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;No, man, YOU'RE a flat circle.&quot;\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cNo, man, YOU\u2019RE a flat circle.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those last two are things <em>Terriers<\/em> has that <em>True Detective,<\/em> so far, seems to lack. I think the HBO series would benefit from a dash of dark humor\u00a0and\/or a bulldog named Winston. But then, on <em>True Detective,<\/em> it would probably turn into a bulldog\u00a0<em>smoking<\/em> Winstons, in a dimly lit bar, French inhaling in slow motion while staring into the existential abyss.<\/p>\n<p>I like both shows because I like stories that give us something to ponder. But I prefer when they can do that without becoming ponderous.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/phenomena.nationalgeographic.com\/2015\/06\/24\/scientists-finally-decide-which-bit-of-this-weird-animal-is-the-head\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scientists Finally Decide Which Bit of This Weird Animal is the Head<\/a>,\u201d Ed Yong reports.\u00a0The weird animal in question is the aptly named <em>Hallucigenia<\/em>, a prehistoric creature found in the Burgess Shale.<\/p>\n<p>Now that our best minds have sorted out which end is which for <em>Hallucigenia<\/em>, maybe they can do the same for, say, ____________.*<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/articles\/remember-guys-we-make-clickbait-for-teenagers-on-the-internet\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">We are up against Netflix and porn, people!<\/a> The bar is <em>low<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stufffundieslike.com\/2015\/06\/dressing-for-the-lord\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Darrell Dow<\/a> shares a survey question used by fundamentalist author David Cloud for his book on \u201cmodesty,\u201d <em>Dressing for the Lord.<\/em> Cloud asked fundie men to tell him:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn your opinion, which of the following items of female dress cause a real potential for lust?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>short skirts<\/li>\n<li>tight skirts<\/li>\n<li>slit skirts<\/li>\n<li>long skirts with slits to the knees<\/li>\n<li>sleeveless blouses<\/li>\n<li>low cut blouses and dresses<\/li>\n<li>tight blouses<\/li>\n<li>sheer blouses<\/li>\n<li>T-shirts<\/li>\n<li>V-neck dresses<\/li>\n<li>form-fitting jeans<\/li>\n<li>looser-fitting pants<\/li>\n<li>shorts<\/li>\n<li>one piece bathing suits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We should treat this as found poetry. I would very much like to hear this poem recited, or perhaps even set to music, by Tom Waits.<\/p>\n<p>(To understand Cloud\u2019s survey and the modesty culture it\u00a0advocates, just read that phrase \u201ca real potential for lust\u201d in the skeeviest, lip-lickingly moist way imaginable.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Since I\u2019ve already\u00a0mentioned Netflix and <em>Terriers<\/em> in this post, let\u2019s put those two things together again and say this: Netflix should bring back <em>Terriers<\/em> for a second season of new episodes. Or Hulu, or Amazon, or Yahoo! or any of the other streaming services now bringing us original content and original series.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>* Initially, I was thinking of Franklin Graham, but instead I\u2019ve decided this should be an audience-participation, fill-in-the-blank joke. It\u2019s non-specific enough to work for almost anyone who seems to have difficulty distinguishing between their head and their hindquarters, or between their mouth and the orifice they sit on.
