It\u2019s not a spoiler to explain that the premise involves a super-powered villain who can exert control over the minds of others. This is a device I\u2019ve seen in dozens, maybe hundreds, of stories before \u2014 so many times that it has become almost a clich\u00e9. Set all of those aside. Here is what that really would mean, and it is deeply unsettling and terrifying in a way that none of those many, many other versions of that story have been.<\/p>\n<p>This is storytelling that requires a trigger warning. I mean that seriously, and also as a high compliment to everything I\u2019ve seen so far from Melissa Rosenberg, Krysten Ritter and David Tennant.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/bilgrimage.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/home-exile-and-teeth-of-shark.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ruth Krall<\/a>: \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">I know what it means to trust the violence one knows more than the calm one wants to know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Slacktivixen decorates our porch with pumpkins every fall, which we usually leave there until after Thanksgiving when I toss them into the woods out back for the deer before I put up the Christmas lights. This year the deer were impatient.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/11\/Pumpkin.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30435\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2015\/11\/Pumpkin-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Pumpkin\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pulled into the driveway yesterday morning and took that photo through the car window from about 10 feet away. She seemed torn between <em>\u201cHuman! Run!\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cPumpkin. Delicious.\u201d <\/em>And opted for the latter<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is also why last year\u2019s experiment with a lovely autumnal flint corn wreath on the front door ended badly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Katie Barnes traces <a href=\"http:\/\/feministing.com\/2015\/11\/17\/its-time-for-a-revival-of-the-teen-girl-dramedy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the dynastic line from Molly Ringwald to Julia Stiles<\/a> and calls for a restoration of the empty throne. Yes, please.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/comments\/3qvj6w\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jar-Jar Binks theory that explains it all<\/a>. Brilliant. Mad. Semi-plausible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Is Vic Berger being uncharitable here by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rOH37W0jPpA\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">editing <em>The Jim Bakker Show<\/em> to make the doomsday televangelist appear even more ridiculous<\/a>? Maybe, but that\u2019s only possible because Bakker has given him so very much material to work with:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vic Berger Presents Jim Bakker&#039;s Buckets\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rOH37W0jPpA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Bakker\u2019s latest scheme involves peddling survivalist-prepper bulk food supplies to his fearful and gullible followers. This is the work of a predatory, exploitative con-artist. But on another level, it at least involves a consistent logic based on the End Times, \u201cTribulation Saints\u201d nonsense of his psychedelic eschatological belief system. It makes a kind of perverse sense to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2015\/11\/05\/left-behind-index-the-whole-thing\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">anyone who\u2019s read the Left Behind books<\/a>, believing them to be gospel, while still wondering why Buck and Rayford and the rest of the idiots in the \u201cTribulation Force\u201d never bother stockpiling food.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">You have to admit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2015\/11\/20\/ted-cruz-whos-trailing-three-other-christians-in-the-gop-primaries-forms-national-prayer-team\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">That\u2019s a great euphemism for a collection of future Christian donors<\/a>.\u201d Yep. Just as the telephone created the \u201cprayer chain\u201d as a vehicle for sanctioned, sanctimonious gossip, so too did the rise of direct-mail database ecclesiology turn \u201cprayer\u201d into a fundraising machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deer have decided it was time to take down our Halloween\/autumn decorations.
