charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/christiancentury.org\/reviews\/2016-04\/trouble-i-ve-seen-drew-g-i-hart\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The church came early to the hanging<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, <a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2016\/05\/05\/religious-accommodations-try-turn-back-clock\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">it\u2019s a big problem with the members of my church<\/a>, my community, and my mother-in-law. .\u2026 They don\u2019t allow that black and white shacking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn one side of your childhood, there is Reagan and AIDS and nuclear war and the yelling Christians. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/the-prince-of-sex\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">And on the other side, there is Prince<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Hastert rose to power, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/prosecutors-offer-details-on-dennis-hasterts-alleged-sexual-abuse-of-teenagers\/2016\/04\/08\/5a96bd68-fcc8-11e5-80e4-c381214de1a3_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_hastert-952pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">believing that his wrongdoing would never be made public<\/a>, his victims struggled with the effects of the abuse, prosecutors wrote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose it would be possible for some social psychologist to explain the underlying issues that lead to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal-a\/2016_04\/the_conservative_fixation_on_b060381.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this conservative fixation on bathrooms<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only did the leaders of this all-male organization refuse to stand by their masculinity manifesto \u2014 that \u2018real men\u2019 are the protectors of women and children \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/carolyncustisjames.com\/2016\/04\/21\/the-failure-of-complementarian-manhood\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">these men circled the wagons and protected a man<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2016\/05\/missouri-republican-on-fetus-personhood-measure-pregnancies-are-silver-lining-of-rape\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">sometimes God can give us a silver lining<\/a> through the birth of a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt creates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2016\/04\/oklahoma-court-rules-that-forced-oral-sex-is-not-rape-if-victim-is-unconscious-from-drinking\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a huge loophole for sexual abuse<\/a> that makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudging by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/porn-site-bans-north-carolina-users-due-to-states-anti-lgbt-laws_us_570bd057e4b0885fb50d9a92\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the stats of what you North Carolinians watch<\/a>, we feel this punishment is a severe one.\u201d<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tDDAa1If-u4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tDDAa1If-u4<\/a>\n<p>\u201cGo home, tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about and how hard <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/buck-newton-keep-north-carolina-straight-hb2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">we must fight to keep our state straight<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2016\/04\/like-giving-in-to-the-muslims-conservatives-gripe-over-christian-schools-name-change\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Crusaders should stay the Crusaders<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn response, Christian parents created T-shirts that say, \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2016\/04\/christian-parents-angry-that-bible-verse-was-taken-off-district-website-dress-kids-in-our-god-is-bigger-shirts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Our God is bigger<\/a>.'\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTucked within the governor\u2019s veto message on \u2018religious liberty\u2019 legislation was a solid blow struck in <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.blog.ajc.com\/2016\/04\/02\/the-baptist-on-baptist-fight-within-georgias-religious-liberty-debate\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the 35-year-old fight over what it means to be a Baptist<\/a> in the South.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evangelicalsforsocialaction.org\/race-justice\/eyes-to-see-how-we-view-racism-in-the-church\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">take seriously the origins of white supremacy<\/a> \u2014 Native American genocide, race-based black chattel slavery \u2014 then racism can never stop. It just mutates into new forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/field-negro.blogspot.com\/2016\/04\/its-never-too-late-to-have-talk.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">If you don\u2019t know what the talk is<\/a> and you are raising an African American male, you might want to learn about it really fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply excluding those whose evangelical faith we deem illegitimate is <a href=\"http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/the-divide-between-trumpvangelicals-and-the-rest-of-us\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">not an adequate response to the problem of Trumpvangelicalism<\/a>. It\u2019s not as though formulating a better theological litmus test, one which Trump\u2019s evangelical backers will inevitably fail, gets our tradition off the hook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signal for Donald Trump\u2019s Flying Monkey Brigade to go on the attack, tweeting anti-Semitic images to Ioffe, calling her up and <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/601202\/after-gq-profile-of-melania-trump-fans-send-writer-amusing-auschwitz-pics-death-threats\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">playing recordings of Hitler speeches, and reminding her that the Holocaust was a complete hoax<\/a>, and the Jews totally deserved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/religionnews.com\/2016\/04\/22\/the-book-that-revolutionized-christian-manhood-15-years-after-wild-at-heart\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32150\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2016\/04\/WildatHeart22.jpg\" alt=\"WildatHeart22\" width=\"550\" height=\"452\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1999 a psychologist conducted a study presenting a folk song about a murder, Kingston Trio\u2019s \u2018Bad Man\u2019s Blunder,\u2019 as a rap song to one group and as a country song to another. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/ten-miles-square\/2016\/04\/criminalizing_hip_hop060305.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The group believing the song was rap had a much more negative reaction<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/13.7\/2016\/04\/12\/473850478\/politics-and-the-fracturing-of-shared-reality\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The slide into the gray zone where all facts about the world are up for grabs<\/a> is the logical consequence of organized science denial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Big Bang belief (part of the evolutionary religion) conflicts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2016\/05\/04\/creationist-ken-ham-the-earth-was-created-before-the-sun-and-the-bible-backs-me-up\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the Bible\u2019s clearing [sic] teaching the earth was created before the sun<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs in previous years, the prayer gathering was closed out by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/dozens-members-congress-join-end-times-rabbi-prayer-rally-capitol\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">messianic End Times rabbi Jonathan Cahn who, just like last year, warned that America is on the verge of destruction<\/a> for having legalized gay marriage nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess we are profiling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarshallproject.org\/2016\/04\/10\/how-racist-is-too-racist#.5Tv5qk70i\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">but they cause all the trouble<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal-a\/2016_04\/breaking_down_barriers_a_60_re060409.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">number of teenagers in the U.S. giving birth is at an all-time low<\/a>, according to federal health officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf all the recommended measures the research team analyzed, <a href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/how-birth-control-could-save-lives-5fa0b72a3f59#.z75dvkunv\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">contraception \u200a\u2014 \u200awhich a low-tech clinic is able to provide \u200a\u2014 \u200acould save the most lives<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they really think that the only story worth telling was the story of God\u2019s care for missionaries? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evangelicalsforsocialaction.org\/reconciliation-and-dialogue\/who-did-god-save-when-the-zamzam-sank\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Had God not cared for everyone on the ship?<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; Fred knows the difference between the possessive \u201cits\u201d and the contraction \u201cit\u2019s,\u201d and he is acutely bothered when others mistakenly confuse the two, yet he himself just kind of instinctively types the apostrophe whether or not it belongs there. Some feel this is his greatest hypocrisy, but those who know him better know better. He\u2019s guilty of much greater hypocrisies. Jesus loves Fred far more than Fred loves Jesus, but he at least has the decency to recognize the unfairness of that lopsided relationship and he has long wished that he were better at maybe kind of sort of doing something more to correct that some day. In 2003 he began writing a review of the best-selling Left Behind series. Eight years later he still hasn\u2019t finished reviewing the second book of that series and the experience has left him a broken shell of a man. Fred knows the difference between the possessive \u201cits\u201d and the contraction \u201cit\u2019s,\u201d and he is acutely bothered when others mistakenly confuse the two, yet he himself just kind of instinctively types the apostrophe whether or not it belongs there. Some feel this is his greatest hypocrisy, but those who know him better know better. He\u2019s guilty of much greater hypocrisies. Jesus loves Fred far more than Fred loves Jesus, but he at least has the decency to recognize the unfairness of that lopsided relationship and he has long wished that he were better at maybe kind of sort of doing something more to correct that some day.
