\u2022 \u201cYou can be the worst, most disrespectful person towards the actual tenets of the faith so long as you insult and belittle the people who don\u2019t share the faith<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith refers to Frederick Sterry Smith, who was talking to police because they\u2019d just arrested him for battery after he shoved his hand down the shirt of a female restaurant manager. He was talking to the restaurant manager because she\u2019d just confronted him about the angrily anti-gay message he\u2019d left for his server instead of a tip.<\/p>\n

Smith is also a white evangelical minister and president\/founder of an \u201cevangelical hands-on ministry devoted to helping hurricane victims in North\u00a0America and the Caribbean.\u201d I wonder just what kind of help that ministry provides. But in any case, \u201cI can say whatever I want, to whoever I want!\u201d is about as concise a summary of Trump-supporting white \u201cChristianity\u201d as you\u2019ll ever see.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Bad News is that the (white) Christian nationalist \u201cProject Blitz\u201d<\/a> is managing to push its next-to-of-course-god-america agenda of white sectarian hegemony through the bush leagues of state legislatures.<\/p>\n

The Better News is that these folks aren\u2019t the sharpest tools in the shed. This is a movement, after all, that considers David Barton<\/em> its leading intellectual superstar. And so even though they\u2019ve got hundreds of white culture warrior state legislators eagerly rushing to assist their agenda of establishing Bartonism as a privileged state religion, they\u2019re not really good at it. Hence things like the weird \u201cIn God We Trust\u201d legislation they\u2019ve rammed through in several states, requiring schools and other public spaces to post that second-string motto on a wall somewhere. (This has more to do with their hatred for America\u2019s previous motto \u2014 E pluribus unum<\/em> \u2014 than it does for any reverence for any referent labeled there as \u201cGod.\u201d)<\/p>\n

It seems the group\u2019s copy-and-paste legislation, as passed recently by the commonwealth of Kentucky, didn\u2019t include any specifics for the size or form of this You Must Post This Motto rule. And so, as Hemant Mehta reports<\/a>, one Kentucky school district found an elegant solution to this unfunded mandate: \u201cInstead of, say, painting the Christian phrase in gigantic letters in some hallway, the board sent each school a framed copy of the back of a one dollar bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022 Curt Schilling was a very good pitcher, even if he was no Steve Carlton. Hall-of-Famer Carlton, sadly, lost his bearings after baseball and became an addled, raving conspiracy theorist. Carlton is pretty bonkers these days, but even at his worst, he\u2019s no Curt Schilling<\/a>. (Basically, Steve Carlton turned into Art Bell while Curt Schilling turned into Alex Jones.)<\/p>\n

But despite getting kicked off of ESPN, Schilling is threatening to run for Congress as a Trumpublican in Arizona.<\/p>\n

Former Phillies closer Mitch Williams remains wildly \u2014 and hilariously \u2014 not fond of his former teammate. If Schilling runs, his opponents \u2014 in the primary as well as the general election \u2014 really ought to fly Wild Thing out there for a few press conferences and rallies. (Although they may need to have a 3-second delay and a bleeper set up for his microphone.)<\/p>\n
