I\u2019m just happy they\u2019re calling it a \u201cBrandeis tax\u201d and a \u201cBrandeis ratio,\u201d because every time anyone asks <em>why<\/em> they\u2019re calling them that, they can quote this, from Supreme Court Justice Louis D Brandeis:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>* * * * * * * * *<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/2011\/dec\/14\/executive-pay-increase-america-ceos\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">U.S. CEOs got totally deserved, completely merit-based raises of 36.47% last year<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWages for everybody else have either been in decline or stagnated in this period, and that\u2019s for those who are in work,\u201d said [Paul] Hodgson [a senior research associate at GMI Ratings]. \u201cI had a feeling that we would see some significant increases this year. After his release, he was billed $1,260 \u2014 the cost of his incarceration at a rate of $60 a day.
