{"id":71750,"date":"2025-10-30T18:07:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T22:07:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/?p=71750"},"modified":"2025-10-30T18:07:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T22:07:26","slug":"south-carerdddd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2025\/10\/30\/south-carerdddd\/","title":{"rendered":"South Carerdddd"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u2022 Interesting NPR report on the recent disputed election in Cameroon, where the 92-year-old president, Paul Biya claims to have won an eighth 7-year term despite him spending much of his time <del>cheating at gold at his Florida resort<\/del> in Switzerland: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/27\/nx-s1-5586685\/cameroon-biya-old-africa-youth\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">In Cameroon, the world\u2019s oldest leader claims victory \u2014 again<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emmanuel Akinwolu\u2019s final paragraph puts that election in the context of African politics more generally, but since he knows he\u2019s writing for an American audience, I\u2019m not sure he\u2019s only talking here about <em>African<\/em> politics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Biya\u2019s long absences and his government\u2019s tightening grip have fueled anger and uncertainty. Cameroon\u2019s crisis reflects a broader pattern across Africa: youthful populations ruled by aging leaders clinging to power through managed elections and weakened institutions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As far as I understand, Paul Biya is still in relatively good health for a 92-year-0ld. He hasn\u2019t been taken for multiple MRIs without explanation, nor been administered regular dementia screenings that he mistook for \u201cvery difficult IQ tests.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/digbysblog.net\/2025\/10\/29\/he-did-it-again\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nor has he drifted off to sleep mid-post on his social media accounts<\/a>. But I\u2019m still not convinced he\u2019ll still live through his entire term as president.<\/p>\n<p>And when he dies, there will be celebrations in the streets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-71786\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/52\/2025\/10\/bafkreiciyosa6g5a2l6hzhv22qwsvikvap7ckhzl35fdti2mk7nuyt5twy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"561\">\u2022 I\u2019ve long admired the design and message of many of the propaganda posters the United States produced during World War II. but I had never seen Mexico\u2019s contributions to this art form until I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/faineg.bsky.social\/post\/3m4es7pksck2o\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this thread of them on BlueSky<\/a>. Mexican WWII posters went <em>hard<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonkette.com\/p\/are-you-ok-google-ai-do-you-need\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAre You OK, Google AI? Do You Need A Policeman Or A Grownup?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bloggers of Wonkette have been exploring the wonders of A.I. Not on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Using Google to search for an older post on the site about refugees, one of them typed in \u201cWonkette refugees,\u201d which somehow convinced Google\u2019s new Clippy-esque \u201cA.I. assistant\u201d to start providing \u2014 i.e., hallucinating, inventing, fabricating \u2014 an entire alternate universe in which their site was ripped to shreds by controversy, spawning a host of new projects from supposedly ex-Wonkette bloggers \u2014 all of it wildly detailed despite being entirely imaginary, implausible, and bizarre.<\/p>\n<p>Doktor Zoom was surprised to find that Google A.I. even provided excerpts from his own imaginary new blog that it imagined he started after it imagined he left the site. \u201cI\u2019m no expert on me,\u201d the real Dok writes, \u201cbut I don\u2019t think I write like that.\u201d (If Google A.I. had provided not just an excerpt, but a <em>link<\/em> to this alternate-universe Doktor Zoom blog this would have been a much creepier, <em>Black Mirror<\/em>-meets-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cam_(film)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Cam<\/em><\/a> story.)<\/p>\n<p>Stories like this are somewhat comforting in that they reassure me that Skynet and the Rise of the Machines is still not a likely near-future scenario. (But then I realize the scope of the suffering that will follow the collapse of the A.I. Tech Bubble and I\u2019m less reassured.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I enjoyed this story from earlier this month \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/10\/06\/cheyenne-man-breaks-wyoming-state-record-with-2-085-pound-pumpkin\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cheyenne Man Breaks Wyoming State Record With 2,085-Pound Pumpkin<\/a>.\u201d The headline is somewhat misleading as growing a 2,000-pound pumpkin requires a team effort. The growers\u2019 passion for this project and their enthusiasm for the competition were fun to see. Measurement-vs.-weight is a fascinating sub-topic in the competitive pumpkin-growing community, but mainly I\u2019m just delighted that there exists such a thing as a competitive pumpkin-growing community.<\/p>\n<p>I went back to find that story again after reading this from <em>The Smithsonian:<\/em> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/the-giant-pumpkin-world-record-just-crept-closer-to-3000-pounds-heres-how-science-sweat-and-soul-crush-keep-growers-reaching-for-the-heaviest-fruit-possible-180987563\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Giant Pumpkin World Record Just Crept Closer to 3,000 Pounds. Here\u2019s How Science, Sweat and \u2018Soul Crush\u2019 Keep Growers Reaching for the Heaviest Fruit Possible<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somewhat dismayed to learn that the new record was established by twin brothers in the UK. Back when Biden was president, <em>America<\/em> grew the world\u2019s largest pumpkins. But <em>not anymore<\/em>. Sad.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I was disappointed to learn that <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/miami-heat-terry-rozier-charged-nba-betting\/story?id=126789368\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mafia-run rigged poker games are now a high-tech enterprise<\/a> involving X-ray tables and special glasses or contact lenses for reading cards marked with special inks.<\/p>\n<p>This seems like cheating at cheating. Call me a hide-bound traditionalist, but I don\u2019t respect a rigged poker game unless it involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OTgwAqcKm_s\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">somebody like Ricky Jay doing what he does here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ricky Jay Plays Poker\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OTgwAqcKm_s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 CBN \u2014 the right-wing white Christian cable network\u2019s \u201cnews\u201d division \u2014 has always been enthusiastically credulous for every new grifter hitting the Warnke Circuit with dramatic \u201cex-Satanist\u201d testimony. But this headline was particularly startling for seeming to suggest a brand new theory of the atonement: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cbn.com\/news\/us\/jesus-saved-his-dad-satanism-and-freed-him-dozen-demons-power-cross-only\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus Saved His Dad from Satanism, and Freed Him from a Dozen Demons<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then again, it\u2019s not really a brand new theory \u2014 a lot of these white Christians <em>already<\/em> believed that \u201cJesus Saved His Dad\u201d who was otherwise powerless in His addictive need for bloodthirsty vengeance.<\/p>\n<p>For a lovely counterpoint to that slander against the character of God, see Richard Beck on Julian of Norwich: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/experimentaltheology.blogspot.com\/2025\/10\/the-quantity-of-hazelnut.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Quantity of a Hazelnut<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt lasts and ever shall, because God loves it.\u201d Preach, sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Julian of Norwich is not officially a saint. But the \u201cex-Satanist\u201d Bartolo Longo now is.<\/p>\n<p>Longo was a devout philanthropist who gave lots and lots of money to build shrines, and there\u2019s a long history of paying back such donors by later canonizing them as saints. Whatever. But my cousins at the Vatican still ought to have been a bit more skeptical about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/vatican\/vatican-news\/satanist-saint-meet-bartolo-longo-who-gave-world-pompeiis-shrine-mary\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Longo\u2019s claims of having been a \u201cSatanist.\u201d<\/a> The main reason that Bartolo Longo is remembered as an \u201cex-Satanist\u201d is because <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Warnke#Investigation_and_debunking\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Cornerstone<\/em> magazine wasn\u2019t around back in the 1800s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in St. Bartolo\u2019s defense, at least he never stole huge chunks of George Carlin\u2019s act and tried to pass it off on his own stuff.<\/p>\n<p>(It still irks me that Wikipedia\u2019s page on Mike Warnke details his marital scandals and his massively debunked lies about having been a \u201cSatanic high priest,\u201d but it doesn\u2019t say anything about his whole \u201cChristian comedy\u201d career stemming from him being a joke thief and milking a church audience that wouldn\u2019t realize they were just being served warmed-over Carlin bits. (The park-in-a-driveway\/drive-in-a-parkway bit and that type of stuff, not the Seven Dirty Words, obviously.))<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A story of an aging authoritarian leader who clings to power despite being increasingly out of touch.
