But do you take personal pleasure in the subversive element of making fun of Nazis? There are Nazi jokes in many of your movies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Yeah. If you can make them seem foolish and silly, then you\u2019ve won. But if you get on a soapbox and go head to head with Herr Hitler and Goebbels, you\u2019re not going to win. They\u2019re good at that [stuff]. But they\u2019re not good at comedy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It isn\u2019t just <em>The Producers,<\/em> Brooks is <em>always<\/em> making fun of Nazis \u2014 in everything from <em>Blazing Saddles<\/em> to his bittersweet remake of <em>To Be Or Not To Be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Brooks applies the same approach to other targets as well, because the same principle that holds for superlatively evil tyrants also holds for incomparably lesser bullies and bigots, prudes and scolds, Comstocks and corporate overlords. None of them is any good at comedy. \u201cIf you can make them seem foolish and silly, then you\u2019ve won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the good news in all such cases is that you don\u2019t need to do much to \u201cmake them seem foolish and silly.\u201d Since they <em>are<\/em> foolish and silly, sometimes all you really need to do is point and laugh.<\/p>\n<p>As the flustercluck swept through the news this week, Conan O\u2019Brien introduced us to Chaz the Intolerant Chick-fil-A Chicken:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chaz The Intolerant Chick-fil-A Chicken | CONAN on TBS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3Ephh9J5BWQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>This is not what \u201cwinning\u201d looks like for Chick-fil-A. And it\u2019s really not good news for the chain that Chaz was popular enough that he\u2019s becoming a recurring character with his own catchphrase: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u-zbQ4zLNps\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eat up you Godless Sodomites!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at Funny or Die, we find the great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2012\/08\/01\/col-sanders-i-love-gay-people-and-were-open-on-sundays\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Goodman as Col. Sanders<\/a> \u2014 icon of the rival Kentucky Fried Chicken. \u201cI love gay people, always,\u201d Goodman\/Sanders says. \u201cAnd we\u2019re open on Sundays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2012\/08\/01\/chick-fil-a-parody-cluck-off-youre-embarrassing-yourself\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kristie Stremel chimes in<\/a> with the beginnings of a song.<\/p>\n<p>People are laughing.<\/p>\n<p>People are laughing and Chick-fil-A cannot laugh with them because they are laughing <em>at<\/em> Chick-fil-A.
