Our reading this week is from the gospel of Matthew:<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.\u201d (Matthew 24:36-44)<\/p>\n

This weekend marks the beginning of the season of Advent. As most Western Christians celebrate it, Advent season commemorates both expectation and preparation: the approaching season of\u00a0Christmas and Christians looking forward to the Second Coming. Advent also marks the beginning of the Western Christian liturgical year and the beginning of our winter holiday season. The word advent<\/i> refers to a \u201ccoming\u201d or \u201carrival\u201d of some looked-for event. It refers to the birth of Jesus long ago, the coming of the Christmas season this year, and the Christian expectation of Jesus\u2019 future return.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s reading begins with a passage from Matthew about the coming of the \u201cSon of Man.\u201d This \u201cSon of Man\u201d figure is from the Jewish apocalyptic book of Daniel. In Daniel 7, the world\u2019s empires are represented as violent beasts bringing destruction and harm to the vulnerable. In Daniel\u2019s narrative, all violence, injustice, and imperial oppression is finally answered for when God\u2019s just future breaks in for the people through this \u201cSon of Man\u201d (see Daniel 7).<\/p>\n

How do the liberation hopes of this first century community relate to our justice work today? We\u2019ll begin unpacking that, next.<\/p>\n
