I feel so strongly about this point. Much harm has been done in Christianity by focusing on Jesus\u2019 death in other ways. I often refer to the essay For God So Loved the World?<\/a> by Joanne Carlson Brown and Rebecca Parker, which explains some of the issues. As I\u2019ve shared before, it is Jesus\u2019 teachings that the early followers found to be intrinsically life-giving. That is the good news in the book of Acts: He whom \u201cthey\u201d had killed, \u201cGod\u201d had brought back to life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.\u201d (Acts 4:33)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power.\u201d (Acts 2:22-24)<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.\u201d (Acts 2:32-33)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, but God raised from the dead.\u201d (Acts 3:12-16)<\/p>\n

\u201c. . . Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead. (Acts 4:10-11)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.\u201d (Acts 5:30-32)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day.\u201d (Acts 10:36-43)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven though they found no cause for a sentence of death, they asked Pilate to have him killed. When they had carried out everything that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead . . . And we bring you the good news that what God promised to our ancestors he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising Jesus.\u201d (Acts 13:35-38)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you find more life-giving value in the teachings of Jesus, teachings that the resurrection testifies to, I want to encourage you this week: you are not alone. This week, in the spirit of those in our lectionary reading for whom the good news was that Jesus was alive, I want to share a small collection of encouraging quotations from other theologians who have deeply encouraged for me, and who have come to your same conclusion.\u00a0We\u2019ll look at those, next.<\/span><\/p>\n
