Our reading this week is from the gospel of John:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father\u2019s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas said to him, \u201cLord, we don\u2019t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus answered, \u201cI am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philip said, \u201cLord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus answered: \u201cDon\u2019t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, \u2018Show us the Father\u2019? Don\u2019t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. (John 14:1-14*)<\/p>\n

This week\u2019 reading is part of the farewell speeches in the Johannine community\u2019s version of the Jesus story. Jesus is saying goodbye.<\/p>\n

The first thing that jumps out at me in this part is Jesus\u2019 exclusivity. If you\u2019ve been following my and Todd Leonard\u2019s lectionary discussions over the past few weeks on YouTube (JustTalking<\/a>), the idea that Jesus is the only means of experiencing gnosis or saving knowledge is very Johannine. It doesn\u2019t work today in our cosmopolitan culture, given universal truths taught in other faith traditions as well as our own. My faith tradition is Christian, but every faith tradition, like mine, has teachings that are life-giving and those that are not. The goal that makes more sense to me is to collect the good in each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second theme in our reading this week that must be addressed is that our reading is very <\/i>gendered. I assume it was written by men within the Johannine community. There is also a lot of gendering of God in this passage, so let\u2019s discuss this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
