As we continue our consideration of reaping what is sown, earlier in Matthew\u2019s gospel, we read:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you<\/i>.\u201d (Matthew 7:1, emphasis added)<\/p>\n

Being treated the way one has treated others has a rich history in Jewish wisdom. Injustice is unsustainable for the long term, and Jewish wisdom often reminds its listeners that we intrinsically, eventually reap what we sow. Consider the following sayings:<\/p>\n

\u201cA wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.\u201d (Proverbs 11:18)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.\u201d (Proverbs 22:8)<\/p>\n

\u201cThey sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.\u201d (Hosea 8:7)<\/p>\n

This wisdom is repeated by the Paul in his letter to the Galatians, although with a slightly different application.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.\u201d (Galatians 6.7-8)<\/p>\n

The book of James also repeats this wisdom:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.\u201d (James 6:7)<\/p>\n

So do the gospels:<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the measure you use, it will be measured to you\u2014and even more.\u201d (Mark 4:24)<\/p>\n

If the intended audience for this week\u2019s reading was the unjust, harsh absentee landlords of Jesus\u2019 society, then Jesus is pronouncing judgment on the elite and wealthy classes who were unjustly exploiting workers through indentured slavery.\u00a0We\u2019ll consider what difference this\u00a0makes and how it relates to us today, next.<\/span><\/p>\n
