Our title this week is Right Now Matters <\/em>and we are considering we our last reading in the lectionary this month which again is from chapter 6 of the gospel of John:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.\u201d [Jesus] said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.<\/p>\n

On hearing it, many of his disciples said, \u201cThis is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, \u201cDoes this offend you? Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you\u2014they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.\u201d For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, \u201cThis is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.\u201d<\/p>\n

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not want to leave too, do you?\u201d Jesus asked the Twelve.<\/p>\n

Simon Peter answered him, \u201cLord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.\u201d (John 6:56-69)<\/p>\n

This is our last lectionary week in John for a while. Next week, the lectionary returns to the gospel of Mark. We have spent the last four weeks not simply in the gospel of John, but specifically in one chapter, John 6. This final passage sums up the four messages of that chapter.<\/p>\n

The first message is a prescription to eat Jesus\u2019 flesh and drink his blood. The second denigrates physically feeding the multitude or meeting people\u2019s material, concrete needs: \u201cYour ancestors ate the manna and died.\u201d The third exalts the Spirit over our material existence. And the fourth emphasizes that our flesh, body, and material existence in this world \u201ccounts for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

We have spent the last four weeks contrasting this way of characterizing Jesus and his ministry with the way Mark, Matthew and Luke characterize them. The Jewish Jesus of Mark, Matthew, and Luke would not have used the language of eating his flesh and drinking his or any blood. We\u2019ll consider those cultural prohibitions against ingesting blood and what this might be saying to us about the gospel of John for us right now, next.<\/p>\n
