When I remained in front of him with my mouth open, holds folded closed, to receive on the tongue he grabbed my hand and took the Body of Christ, wedged it between my fingers and said, \u201cJust take it. It\u2019s easier this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
I\u2019ve heard similar stories from others: A friend who knelt to receive communion was shocked when\u00a0the priest snarled at him, \u201cGet up. We don\u2019t do that here.\u201d Another friend tells me how he went\u00a0forward for communion and the priest says, \u201cHi Fred. Hey. I like your new mustache! The Body of Christ.\u201d Others have said the same as Katrina. They\u2019ve opened their mouth to receive communion on the tongue only to have the priest give them a blessing instead.<\/p>\n
This kind of thing is an outrage. What is especially annoying about this is that this kind of priest usually thinks he is a wonderful, laid back, easy going, super nice guy. He\u2019s the sort who advocates \u201cthe pastoral approach\u201d which means he doesn\u2019t bother to observe any church rules or regulations, does what he pleases, soothes everybody with a sweet and gooey \u201cchurch of nice\u201d message and thinks he\u2019s Father Fabulous.<\/p>\n
But should he come across a Catholic who happens to have conservative ideas he becomes Father Forceful. He who prides himself on \u201clistening and dialogue\u201d shuts down the conversation. He who is tolerant and open minded suddenly becomes a \u201cmy way or the highway\u201d kind of priest. He who dislikes clericalism and wants to \u201cempower the people\u201d gets pretty uptight when one of \u201cthe people\u201d doesn\u2019t see things his way.<\/p>\n
If this is the \u201cpastoral approach\u201d may the good Lord deliver us from such pastors.<\/p>\n

The Anchoress rants about this idiocy here and points out another aspect to this story: When Katrina asked for a priest to give last rites to her dying grandmother the parish official who took the call insisted that one of their \u201cprayer teams\u201d could do the job. Lay people can\u2019t anoint the sick. Deacons can\u2019t anoint the sick. What\u2019 up with this priest?
