To forgive ourselves doesn\u2019t mean letting ourselves off the hook. \u00a0It means refusing to give into the temptation to heap coals on ourselves for having failed. \u00a0St Francis de Sales in his\u00a0Introduction to the Devout Life<\/em>\u00a0reveals the folly of this approach when he notes that our sins tend to be in a flawed attempt to make ourselves feel better. \u00a0Therefore, the worse we make ourselves feel about our sins and failings the more likely we\u2019ll be to sin again in that same pathetic attempt to making ourselves feel better for having sinned! \u00a0It truly is a vicious spiritual cycle. If we were to apply Augustine\u2019s formula for forgiveness to ourselves, we\u2019d have to say that\u00a0forgiving ourselves means surrendering our natural desire to hurt ourselves\u2026 for having hurt ourselves<\/em>. \u00a0 Think about that a minute. \u00a0How quick are we to heap pain on ourselves for having hurt ourselves?\u00a0 Does that even make sense? \u00a0How is that supposed to help?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
