It\u2019s a penitential season.<\/p>\n<p>So off we go to confession to confess our sins.<\/p>\n<p>But why is something sinful anyway?<\/p>\n<p>Most of us believe things are sinful because someone has told us they are sinful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t sleep with a girl before marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy \u00a0not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s sinful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is it sinful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Bible, God\u2019s word says it\u2019s sinful and because the church says its sinful and because the priest says its sinful. It\u2019s sinful. Don\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So we think things are sinful simply because the voices of authority said it is sinful.<\/p>\n<p>So soon we associate sinful things with things that give us pleasure\u2013usually sexual sins or sins of gluttony or drunken-ness. Before long, if we\u2019re not careful, we start thinking that anything we like must be sinful.<\/p>\n<p>Then we start feeling guilty and then we start thinking that anything that makes us feel afraid, guilty or ashamed are the things which are most sinful.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, we never stop to think WHY a thing is sinful from the ground up.<\/p>\n<p>The church teaches that something is sinful for one of two reasons or both\u2013that an action goes against the natural order or it goes against Divine Revelation.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, a thing is wrong if is un-natural or because God told us not to do it\u2013or God told us to do it and we didn\u2019t follow through.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a disgusting, but obvious example: bestiality.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/standingonmyhead\/why-is-something-sinful\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Continue Reading<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s Lent.
