In the musical\u00a0Oklahoma!\u00a0<\/em>Ado Annie and Will Parker sing, \u201cWith Me It\u2019s All or Nuthin\u2019 is it All or Nuthin\u2019 With You?\u201d I like to imagine the duet being sung by Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux and Friedrich Nietzsche. I can just see the sweet little French girl and the skinny German with his big moustache, the first crying out in girlish enthusiasm, \u201cI will have all!\u201d and the second in sickly sadness crying, \u201cI will have nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Doctor of the Church and the Philosopher of the Anti-Church were contemporaries. Nietzsche was born in 1844 and died in 1900. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se was born in 1873 and died three years before Nietzsche in 1897. In one of those quirks of history, the two of them stayed in the same hotel in Paris while Th\u00e9r\u00e8se and her father were on pilgrimage to Rome.<\/p>\n

Nietzsche was the son of a small-town Lutheran pastor and teacher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
