\"blackfriars\"My article at Aleteia<\/a> this week is a discussion of Cardinal Sarah\u2019s encouragement of\u00a0ad orientem\u00a0<\/em>celebration of the Mass.<\/p>\n

Last week the French publication\u00a0Famille Chretienne<\/em>\u00a0published a lengthy interview with Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, in which he urges a return to Mass being celebrated\u00a0ad orientem<\/em>\u00a0and explains why. To get the right answer we must first ask the right question, and the question is \u201cMass? What\u2019s the point?\u201d<\/p>\n

There are two possible \u201cpoints\u201d or focuses for the Mass: God or the People of God. In\u00a0ad orientem<\/em>\u00a0celebration of Mass the priest is not so much \u201cturning his back to the people\u201d as he is facing the same way as his people and praying with them. Together their orientation is away from themselves and towards God. The \u201cpoint,\u201d therefore, is to turn our hearts to the Lord.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
