But during Lent a good read is Dante\u2019s\u00a0Inferno.\u00a0<\/em>My favorite translation used to be Dorothy Sayers, but I\u2019ve been converted. I am really enjoying Tony Esolen\u2019s translation. You can find it here<\/a>. I\u2019m sorry I first bought Esolen\u2019s books in paperback. They are already coming apart. If you can afford it, get the hardcover copies.<\/p>\n

If Dante is daunting, why not try an updated and very well written version by my friend\u2013the prolific author Paul Thigpen? His book has the unfortunate title,\u00a0My Visit to Hell.\u00a0<\/em>He hates the title himself, admitting that it sounds like a back to school essay\u2026 \u201cWhat I did on my summer vacation\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul\u2019s book is gripping, funny, poignant and vivid. It\u2019s written as prose, with an up to date guide through the inferno and with up to date characters and a few changes to take on the evils of the modern world that Dante could never have envisioned. You can get a copy here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
